I think it is dating. Casually say something like "Oh aren't you the best bofriend." :P Or something like that. You know, just mention the thing in front of him. Wait for a reaction.
Or you could talk to him but technically, you might hurt his feelings if he thinks it was obvious, but you don't.

I think there's a difference between casual dating and being boyfriend/girlfriend. By the sound of it, you guys are in the casual dating phase with nothing serious or confirmed yet. As soon as one of you asks the question and it becomes official, you two will be seriously dating (as in, boyfriend/girlfriend).

Well, when I was starting to date my ...now ex boyfriend, he didn't ask me to be his girlfriend for a while, but he still considered us to be 'dating'.
But I would definitely talk with this boy. (: Couldn't hurt, right?

That's the best way to find out. Don't be shy about it, because you never know, he might be thinking the same exact thing about you!

Hm...well you really need to discuss it with the boy. Don't just assume because he may be feeling platonic feelings. Talk to him about it, tell him you're confused. No one can really answer that question because well...we all think of holding hands to have different meanings.

If the question (give or take a few words) "Do you want to go out with me?" was never asked, I don't think you two are actually dating.
However, that was obviously a date. I'd just ask him about it. If he says that you two aren't boyfriend/girlfriend, maybe you should ask him out? Or wait until he asks you out :) He obviously wants to by the way he wouldn't let go of your hand.
