Being a private person is not at all a bad thing. Some people like sharing their "problems"/experiences, others don't. :)
I would've said "so sorry about your health", but upon reading this I feel that's slightly inappropriate of me, as, like you said, you can talk, see, walk and whatnot, and I get the feeling you don't want that kind of condolence.
