I know envy is a deadly sin, but... I can't help but wish I was one of -those- girls. [I'm an elf! Long time no journal, eh?] - Comments

I'm atheist and I celebrate Christmas to spend time with family. I don't think of it as a religious holiday, I think of it as a time to be with family and give them gifts and tell them I love them. I don't think it makes me any less of an atheist.December 25th, 2009 at 04:10am

My Personal Development teacher***. :p But yeah. It says things like 'I am an awesome person and I am beautiful' or something. I love it. :] That way every morning while you get ready, you are reminded of just how amazing you really are. (:December 25th, 2009 at 02:31am

I'm doing the same thing as you.
I forgot to answer your question.
My mom and I believe in God but she doesn't go to church. I do. My little sister is nine, so. My brother is atheists and has been for a few years. He has a baby on the way and he decided that he isn't going to let his child celebrate Christmas until he's old enough to decide what religion he wants to be apart of. (His girlfriend thinks otherwise. She's gonna celebrate Christmas no matter what. It's hard to tell how little baby Aiden's first Christmas is going to go.) When he told my mom that she got pissed and said she isn't going to get him anything. She only got him one or two things. My brother is confusing. lol.
edit: I don't see why he wouldn't let a baby celebrate Christmas. I mean tons of atheists celebrate it.December 25th, 2009 at 02:30am -
v Awww, that's a good idea! It sounds cute! XD
Thank you! :)December 25th, 2009 at 02:24am -
My Personal Development has a mirror and over it, it says something like 'I am beautiful no matter what' or something. It really boosts confidence. Maybe you could try something like that. :]
Merry Christmas to you, too! :DDecember 25th, 2009 at 02:24am -
v Yeah, it seems Christmas is good for everyone. XDDecember 25th, 2009 at 02:18am

My sister and I are of no religion, my mother believes in God but doesn't go to church or anything like that, and my dad is all about science.
We're all still big Christmas lovers. {:December 25th, 2009 at 02:17am -
v Thank you! 8D

Merry Christmas to you! :] What are your plans? Anything exciting?
I get what you're saying about wanting to be confident about how you look. I don't have any ideas to what you could do about it but I thought I'd let you know that there is other people who feel the same.December 25th, 2009 at 02:15am
The Solstice celebration was one of the original holidays. In an attempt to get the pagans to convert to Christianity, Christians decided that the pagans could still celebrate the solstice as the birth of Christ. Even then, Christmas wasn't an important religious celebration until about 60 years ago. During the Communism Scare, many Christian organizations stepped up and talked the government into making things more religious to show that America could not become as the Godless Communists. It's why Christmas is so religious, why our pledge has the mention of God, and why our money has "In God We Trust." Things also became so commercialized so the economy could function better.
Instead, the holiday was all about the celebration of family, and was spent much like New Year's Eve is now- huge parties that celebrate just being alive. I believe that most atheists take the same approach to Christmas. It's just a nice holiday to acknowledge being alive and spending time with loved ones.
But I hope that that helps you with the question in regards to atheists. It's not to say that all atheists support such things. There are certainly atheists who do dislike the holidays, and believe that other atheists shouldn't celebrate it. But I imagine there are people of all walks of life, in regards to religion, who feel the same about the winter holidays.
