Does anyone else think it's weird when authors under 17 rate their stories NC-17? - Comments

    v. No, I know it's not only about sex, but that is definitely something that could make a story have an NC-17 rating. I agree with Turd too though. :)

Just because something is rated NC-17 doesn't mean it's about sex.
    If that's what you're thinking.

well no I don't think it matters cause if it's content like hard like that you can't say it's rated pg 13 & not rated R you know I think it's just for readers to know the rating & if their mature to read it or not cause right now i'm reading a BOOK that's for adults it's pretty gruesome & i'm only 15 so

I wrote NC-17 stories and read them before I was 17. I don't think it's weird. People under seventeen have sex and drink and curse and do all kinds of things in real life. We're human. I personally don't engage in those activities myself but I write mostly romance and there's a lot of mature things that happen when you're in a mature relationship.

Turd True, but I think an R rating is still suitable for the story I wrote.

I don't see how it would be illegal at all it's more of a parental type thing. Some parents are really strict with what kids are exposed to at different ages some parents are really lenient, it's a matter of governing content so that those who are strict know what they are dealing with before hand leaving no room to complain about not warning the general public. It's placing a general standard but not something specific and individual, some under 17 year olds are restricted to such content and thus stay away others are not so it doesn't matter.

My parents personally have been letting me be exposed to R rated stuff since I was like 5 and I don't really think they should go to jail for it. The only thing I find weird about younger people writing NC-17 stories is if the person is writing something sexual while having 0 sexual experience.

And plus, there is a difference between R rating and NC-17. So if you're under 17 and you write a story that's meant to be rated like that, and you rate it R, well that can get your story taken off for being rated inappropriately.

I agree with turducken. It's more to let you know that you're getting into before you read the story then you actually have to be 17 or over. It say here (http://www.mibba.com/forums/topic/12127/) that NC-17 isn't intended for minors. Of course that depends on the minor and how comfortable you are with the blood gore/language/sex scenes. If you're completely comfortable with it then all means go read/write it but if you're not there's a warning. Y'know.

    v. Yeah, I thought that, but I still would feel weird if I did it. Doesn't bother me if anyone else does it.

I think it's not really as much as "YOU HAVE TO BE 17 OR OVER TO READ" but more you get an idea of what you're getting into when you read the story, and so to watch out. You know?
Like, the age doesn't matter as much as you getting an idea of what the content is like.

Isn't that technically illegal? I don't think minors are supposed to write NC-17 stories...I know that's a rule on another site I use, and they say it's for legal purposes.
