I used to have a dirty Blonde color and I dyed it black a while back but my sister is a hair dresser and she went through a process of bleaching my hair over two days and then toned it to the shade I want so id highly suggest visiting a salon if you haven't already.

GO TO A SALON! Really. Two years ago, I went dark brown. It faded to shit, so I went red (whyyyyy?). I did a full head of blonde highlights, let the rest of the red fade, and dyed over that at the end of last year with a light brown. I'm (almost entirely) back to my dirty blonde. I will nevereverever do that again.

I'd try going to a professional to see what they can do. There's no point in damaging your hair even further, right?

You said you've dyed it red a couple of times and dark brown, meaning you're going to have to strip out all of those colour pigments before you even touch a yellow tone. Personally (and I'm not just saying this because I'm a hairdresser), I would advise you to visit a salon, especially if you have a specific tone in mind.
They can always do a couple of bleach baths to strip the colour and then put a blonde tint over it to neutralize any orange or yellow tones.
I'm only suggesting a salon because there's a chance you could end up with a variety of shades if you bleach yourself and it probably won't be any cheaper if you have to buy a few home dye kits, bleach and silver shampoo to get the look you want.
bah I'm rambling, feel free to PM or comment me if you've got any questions & I'll do my best to help :)

If you bleach it you'll probably find it hard to get the colour you want.

I'm currently in the process of going from black to ginger (my hair is naturally a light brown), and my hairdresser said that if I were to strip my hair, the ginger would have looked whacked. So, I'm getting highlights every few months with random lighter ginger colours and it's slowly getting to the colour I want. :D

Meh, just bleach it. I bleached mine 10 times in two days.
    Go-go-go.

You could buy blonde hair dye to help lighten your hair instead of using straight bleach. I used that to make my mom's hair to a very light brown/really dark blonde. It was black before.
Your hair may be different from my mom's SO, what I would suggest is buy the blondest hair dye you can find, and use that lighten your hair, then go from there. It's less damaging then straight bleach. Also, after dying it and all use a leave in conditioner. It helps to keep your hair healthy and I think there are some leave in conditioners that help keep color in better or something.

I bleach my hair once a week till I got the color I was looking for, you can do so but prepare for funky colors for a while. I use professional hair bleach and processing caps from Sally's Beauty Supply store, it's fairly cheap.

Clairol products are the best, and use Ion deep conditioner to moisturize your hair. It's what they use in salons. Even if you have naturally greasy hair, I suggest only washing your hair every other day. Washing it every day while bleaching strips all the necessary oils to moisturize the hair out, and can leave it dry and damaged.

So follow the directions (it's best if you have help) exactly and it should turn out fine.
