  • Well, I agree with all of them XD Especially the last two. To be honest, the first chapter lacks description, I wont read the rest. And Mary-sues are defiantly a no for me, it makes me cautious of most fanfic's with OC's in it. I find the best way to avoid all of these though is to only read recommendations. They are always worth reading :)

I can understand why, I'm starting to use them less and less, but I still do for like a first draft for a character and develop them from there :)

  • @ dru is ready.
I know it isn't, I'll be doing a seperate one for original fiction. This is more for people who solely write fanfiction :) As for the character profiles, well, it's just my way for writing a decent character, it doesn't work for everyone but it does for me. Just a difference in writing/planning styles I guess :)

  • Just a personal opinion; but I genuinely loathe character profiles. They feel like they drain all creativity from the character for me. I want to learn about my character as I write them; for me, that's part of the thrill of it.

Like I tried doing a character profile once and I basically wanted nothing to do with said character once I was done. I don't know why. They just don't work for me.

I fully understand though, if it works for other people. I'm sure it can be a useful technique for them when they start a story with keeping all their information about their MC or secondary characters in check. But its definitely not for everyone.

  • None of what you said is exclusive to fanfiction. Original fiction does this as option. I also disagree with your profile to create characters. I think creating a really interesting backstory is a lot more important than height and weight.

  • I agree with everything you've said but it's not exclusive to fan fiction.

Thank you for commenting :) I have to agree with you on that, I find it kinda boring too, and you see it a lot in original fiction too :(

Thanks for commenting, I do read original fiction, but not on here. This blog was dedicated to fanfiction though, which is why I haven't mentioned it at all.
I personally use profile to help start the basics of a character and once I come to know him/her in my mind, I drop the profile and move on, that's personally how I do it, it's not nessicarily the best way, it's just the way I find works best for me :)
You obviously have good characters for no-one to point out any flaws with them, so there's not really anything I can say with that :)
And yeah, sometimes cliches can be spun off really well, and it is hard to find a story without even one cliche in it, it's just hard to pull off (or I usually find it hard to do) which is why, when people ask my advice, I advice them not to go for the usual cliches.

  • Shouldn't this be titled '4 Things I hate about fiction'? I mean, none of these are fanfiction-specific in the least. Or do you just not read original fiction? Also, I disagree with needing a profile type thing for characters, and the entire 4th thing in general. I personally just get into the mindset of my characters and I'm good to go. I've never had a single person tell me that my characters aren't unique enough or under developed, either, except when I do use a profile. Then I always have to refer back to it and it just feels too structured and factual, rather than raw and real. As long as you keep a few simple facts written down, there isn't really a problem for most people. And Mary Sues are boring, yes, but if you work a cliché to your advantage (such as someone close to the breaking point and self-harming) and spice that up to where it's interesting, the story itself won't seem cliché and you'll probably get amazing feedback just for succeeding. So yeah, Mary Sues are bad, but not the clichés people attribute to them. It's impossible to write a story free of all clichés, it's just up to the author to make it interesting.

  • Number 2 is a big dislike of mine for any fiction. There are so many stories out there that have the dominant male/submissive woman couple. I would absolutely love for once for the woman to be the dominant one. I'd love for a female to be the dominant mistress in a smut fiction. I'd love for the female to be the bad girl in a high school romance. I'd love for the female to be able to take care of herself instead of running to a man to protect her all the time. It's like Letty from Fast and Furious, she's generally a bad ass woman who can fend for herself and kick some ass. Granted, that's not a story but it was the first thing that came to mind. I want more females like her in stories.

I just hate the stereotypical strong, powerhouse male and delicate, weak female roles in fictions.

  • I absolutely love this blog! I might even come back to it. I never write fanfictions. But I am a terrible sucker for Harry Potter fanfics. But I go to a way different site than this one.
