I think for some authors it's gotten to the point where they have had to put disclaimers like "don't like don't read" on their stories as I have heard from friends that readers have read their story and then abused them for the content. No, not offered constructive criticism, but abused them for writing something that they didn't like. If a story has noted that it contains certain scenes that may not be to everyone's liking, it's not much use to anybody if they read it and then attack the author over it. That to me is the more immature response than someone putting a disclaimer on.

I do agree about the not owning the band members though - that's pretty much a given lol

Some of us have been part of websites that require disclaimers. Some of those will kick you off if you do not put disclaimers on your stories. And as I have said before, NO, every user is not mature enough to click out of a story they do not like. Some of us have been insulted, bashed, and ridiculed simply for writing about slash, for instance. Someone on Tumblr told me I was disturbed. The comment is public; anyone can see it. Therefore, I tell people not to read it if they do not like the subject. I should not have to remind someone of this, but unfortunately, I do. At least then I can point out I warned them properly.

The band thing annoys me also. If you did own Sleeping With Sirens you wouldn't be wasting time writing about them.

Some fans do act like they own bands and stuff, regardless of whether or not they put in "I don't own [insert band name/artist here]." >_> WHich annoys me greatly.

The whole "owning" bands thing is such a middle school thing. and also a big pet peeve of mine

    But I don't have a problem with the "Don't like, don't read".

I hate seeing "don't like don't read" thing in stories because it seems so hostile and immature. If they can't maturely warn someone, then how good will their writing be? I'm probably unfairly judging people, but it really turns me off because such a hostile warning tells me that their writing may not be very mature either. I really don't understand why more people can't put the generic trigger or content warnings and put them in a nice manner. I don't understand why we've got to be hostile and threatening about it.

I can see the disclaimers when it comes to things like anime or video game fanfics, but I have to agree that they're kind of pointless on bandfics. I mean, it's fairly obvious that the author doesn't own the band because well, they'd probably be in jail for slavery or something like that. It is pointless for bandfics but when it comes to other types of fanfics that involve fictional characters, it's a bit more complicated. It'd be easier to cross the line into copyright infringement since it can be less obvious which characters you do and don't own. So for a lot of authors who write anime and/or video game fanfics, I think it's just a small precaution they take. I'd added copyright to my fanfics, although it's a small one that's barely noticeable. For me, it's just a basic precaution. Is it a paranoid precaution? Yes, I can admit that. But it's better to be safe than sorry, no?

It's the same reason I have my own copyright on my stories. Although I don't use my username, I use my pen name (which just happens to be my username as well lol). I think it's better to use your name/pen name because that holds more weight than a username does. It's a precaution is all. I know my work is already copyrighted, however, having the copyright statement there is an added precaution. If I were to ever need to pursue legal action against someone, it would be further proof that the stories are indeed mine and copyrighted by me. I care deeply for all my stories, fanfic or original, and I'll do what it takes to make sure they're protected. It's just a small copyright statement that could help me protect my work if the time ever came.

I don't mid warnings as long as it doesn't have "don't like don't read." Some warnings are okay, I think Cute

As for disclaimers, I think it's generally for copyright and trademark purposes. Right? i don't even know
