I agree with you 100% here.
Like I would get picky on how a story is started.
The first chapter HAS to get me right into the story.
If it starts off boring I will still read it but it will catch me a bit off guard.
For my stories, I make sure to get right into the action :P

Stories that move me always take me by surprise. I don't always get moved by a book, but when I do it's sort of breathtaking.

I'm not even gonna lie; sometimes I really like a well written, sappy romance in between the blazing gun fights and speedy car chases. XD I guess it really depends on my mood...

Though now that I think about it, I like stories that have a strong "impact"...usually the emotional type. I like it when I read something and it moves me somehow.

I love both fanfictions and original fics, but I'm with you on leaning towards action. I really enjoy the fantasy kind of stuff, like fairy tales, or superheroes or things of that type of genre. I always find the best writing there and it appeals to me more!!

I personally like original fictions, only because I'm not into most of the big fandoms that are popular here.
Other thsn that I am not all that picky, I don't think, but I am quite a sucker for actiony stuff. But really, most of the stuff I rec are ones with beautiful detailing in the stories.
How about you? What kind of stuff do you want to read??

You are pretty much right on the dot. XD I literally have the same pet peeves and the some. and I am also guilty of using fonts that are far too small... I do try to fix them whenever someone points it out though.

Do's for me would be things like vivid details where the scene it almost painted in front of you, clever plot twists, and I actually kinda have a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. Guh, I love a GREAT suspense, especially if I didn't see it coming.

Don't's for me...not to be a grammar nazi, but I really dislike excessively repetative errors in grammar and spelling. I'm not perfect either with the grammar and spelling, but if I come across a piece that looks like the person didn't put any effort into editing it, I can't really read it. It disrupts the flow of the read of what could otherwise be a great story, you know?
Another thing, one of my greatest pet peeve is CHAT SPEAK. I can't. Guh, I just can't read something l1k3 tH1s for a chapter. I actually get soooo irritated, no joke. It's one thing to show strings of texts between characters or something but even then, it bugs me.
Oh...and run-on sentences are a major buzz kill. Seriously.

Jeez, sorry, didn't mean to write you an essay.
If you find a great read, could you let me know? I've been dying to read something great.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Turing off the layout bothers me too. It's just so frustrating

I agree! I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't stand stupid comic sans and distracting and/or hard to read layouts.

Oh ok, thanks! Definitely. Unless it's a developed characteristic of a person, I generally can't stand whining. Even then, they're annoying as hell.

Okay so you know when you start a story and right off the bat someone is making their character sort of go on and on about a problem as opposed to addressing it? Like they talk about how much it sucks or how annoying it is instead of making it seem like it's unfornuate but the character can deal

I agree with every single point on this blog. It's really annoying to have my eyes brutally murdered by an especially odd layout and that is definitely something that will turn me off instantly. I totally hate when chapters (anywhere throughout the story) start with some sort of cliche. It's just a lack of creativity to me and I don't feel any sort of pull to read something low in imagination.

I do have one question...what do you mean by making them whine within the first chapter? I suppose I just don't know to which extent.

-Don't: Use commic sans ms I swear to god this font should be band because I don't think anyone takes anyone seriously when they write in comic fucking sans ms. I'M A COMIC SANS MS RACIST OKAY I CAN'T GET OVER IT DON'T DO IT DO NOT JUST DON'T USE THE FORBIDDEN FON'T

Serious though. I only use Times or that one that begins with a G (I don't even know the name of it that's how often I use it lmfao). The other fonts just give me bad feelings. I just hate every single font except Times and the G one.

I usually go for the small text, like you!! Thankfully on my Mac I can zoom in it the text is too small so usually I don't have that problem, it's mostly big text!
