    I forgot Stephen King the master of horror said that about Meyer but he hit the nail on the head and is one of the best horror writers ever. Bella is the one of the main reasons I hate the series. Who wants a weak main character? On top of that make her so annoying to the point I don't care about her. The point of the series that's a good message for young readers give up everything and be in that kind of a relationship just to have a boyfriend.

    "I want a relationship like Edward and Bella's." the hell is wrong with you? None of the characters in her books are really likeable they just annoy the hell outta me.
    Anne Rice is amazing not only one of the best vampire writers but one of the best writers of all time. When people say Meyer is the next Rice I ask them have they even ready any of Rice's work. I'm sure you can guess the main answer I keep hearing.

    I'm still working on TVC too

    Here's my "constructive criticism" on both authors:

    Stephanie Meyer...well...I read her books (the Twilight Series mostly; all in a 2 week time period) and they always ending up to piss me off to no end.
    When I read the very last book of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, I nearly threw it out the window and wanted to choke a bitch.
    Worst damn book I ever read. It was good for the first third of it but the rest bored me to death and led to an ending that just...wasted my time.
    Eclipse is my favorite of the series if I had to pick one but the rest just SUCKED. Bella is weak and annoying.
    From how I read it, the whole series is on how important it is to have a damn boyfriend (according to brilliant quoting by Stephen King and how I viewed it as well). YUCK.

    Anne Rice, however, makes me LOVE the characters.
    Her writing is brilliant, along with the voice she puts in the story.
    Lestat is sexy, dangerous, and quite charming. I absolutely love him.
    I need to finish the series but either way, she is an excellent writer and one of the best vampire novelists of all time (in my opinion, once again).
    Of course, nothing in my view can beat Dracula. That is an instant vampire classic that sits at the throne.

    ~~~
    Stephanie Meyer as somewhat good writing, since everyone has their own style.
    I just tended to not like it...along with everyone else I know who said that they "despise" her "abomination" to the vampire label in novels.
    Sorry but Anne Rice wins all the way.
    I was the same with Twilight till I read it again and saw the movies. Also with Meyers books it's not like Rices where after I finish the book I want to read it again immediately. Anne writes her characters where you love them, feel bad for them and so on. Don't get me started on Bella
    Anne Rice is one of my (personal) favorite authors. I remember watching the Interview movie first, just because it was on TV, and then I had to get the book--no one thought I'd actually be interested in reading it, never mind making it through the entire thing. Which I feel proud in saying I've done twice now, and it still hasn't gotten old. With Twilight, I will admit, I was more than hooked... then I turned twelve. After the second time of reading it, it just kind of... lost its touch, per se. While it was a hurricane when it first appeared, it lost momentum fast and died out even quicker. Years later and Rice's vampires are still leaving lasting impressions on the different generations. As of now, I don't see Meyer reaching Rice's level, but as pointed out, she's still an early writer. With time that may change, but for now she's just another dying star in the sky.
    Anne Rice, there is no way to compare the two. Their views on vampires, what they wanted to achieve as well as their writing styles are different.
    She has talent no doubt about that but she can do better. But like you said only time will tell Meyer will hopefully improve with time. I'm just not that impressed by her work. Like I said she can write but she's no Anne Rice
    I'm highly disturbed at the negativity of the comments here. We should encourage writing and just because someone doesn't like an author doesn't give them the right to say "Oh they'll never be as so and so". That's rude and an opinion. No one can predict how good she may be years from now.
    @ ladyschrei
    Thanks.
    She can try but she won't ever achieve what Anne Rice has done literature wise and creative wise
    Anne Rice is an amazing writer, and no other author will ever rival her in that genre. Her work is different to all the other works out there even close to the genre. Meyer has NO HOPE of achieving that mantle.
    Exactly like I said that's bad if I don't care what happens to the main character. It disturbs me when I hear people say they want a relationship like Bella and Edward.
    I don't think the sparkling point is fair at all. Interpretations of vampires have been varying and changing for a long time, even before vampires became popular in the mainstream media; so there's never really been a definite way to write them. Myer's interpretation of vampires sparkling isn't due to her lack of research, it's just her creative take on the matter (even if it is incredibly ridiculous, in my opinion).
    Also, I don't think the films have anything to do with the talent of the writers. Unless they had a say in absolutely everything, it's a completely different media translated through the creativity of other people (directors/actors/producers, ect).
    I guess in the end, it all comes down to the style the individual likes more. As you said, they're completely different, but maybe a little too different to compare.
    Ok... First off, the two shouldn't be compared. The whole thing needs to stop.
    Rice has much more experience
    Both wrote for different audiences
    Both reinvented vampires the way they wanted
    Anne Rice was a genius. Her books did lag in places, I won't lie, but she made you love the characters. She presented them as vulnerable and yet powerful. Like anyone else whine when Louis found Lestat and Lestat was afraid of the helicopter? There was romance between them, beautifully rendered because they do end up together. It's not even that Bella literally had to change herself, it's that she picked a guy who openly abused and controlled her, encouraged her to lie to her father, and openly threatened her. It was frightening to say the least.
