Realistic doesn't have to mean super awkward and not sexy. I've been elbowed in the face and still had a good time after I got over it! As long as it's peppered in and not the main feature, awkward realism can be nice in a good sex scene. Just my take on that part.
I'd also like to add that even focusing a lot more on what the characters are thinking/feeling opposed to the grossly explicit detail of the deed can be great too! Now obviously if you're reading/writing a romantic plot you're not going to want the awkward stuff in there and that's the majority of stories that contain sex (focused on romance).
I don't write smut but if I did I'd have it that the "first time" is really good because that's how my first time was so I'd be using my own experience, ya know? I wouldn't care that others are like "It's so unrealistic" because to me, it's not, it's my own experience so yeah.
I think a lot of people don't realize that a lot, if not most, sex in romance is supposed to be sensual and arousing. I don't know about you, but accidentally coming down on someone's hair, elbowing someone in the face, and falling off the bed into the nightstand isn't sexy to me.
I agree. I try to put the characters thoughts and feelings to help the readers get more into the story, ya know?
