I'll admit I'm not perfect, and occasionally I'll accidentally forget to leave a comment on a chapter I've read. I'll go back and leave a comment later though, and I try my best, even if it's something short and sweet.

In regards to the blog I wrote a few days ago (which I feel may have partially inspired this blog), that wasn't inspired because from comments on my stories. I get comments on most updates, and it keeps me happy (though there is the occasional lack of response, which I mentioned). It was a fellow author, and friend, who was getting disheartened by the lack of response, who got me thinking about it, then when I saw an amazing author I love not have any other commentors, it annoyed me. So, I voiced my annoyance.

You have one point I agree with- we should do something about it. Personally, I just never think of comment swap or recommendation journals, and they are really good ideas.

I comment on everything I read, at least every second chapter. It's just polite tbh. :D

I don't let it bother me when people don't comment, even if it is rather frustrating after a few chapters. But at the end of the day I'm writing for myself.

I actually don't read stories here for that reason alone. I don't want to end up being a silent reader who doesn't comment. The reason is because I'm not very good at writing them, so I don't read other stories. I agree with what miser says because she does make a very valid point. I choose not to read at all mainly because I don't know how to comment or leave good critiques on why I enjoyed the story.

I can't speak for others but I am one of those who get annoyed at silent readers, and I can say I comment on almost all stories I read. I also try to do my best for stories I think deserve more recognition, but recognition still doesn't give stories more comments.

The reason I can comment on stories I read is because I read very few stories a month. Maybe instead of reading ten stories a week, people can cut back on some reading and use that time to leave comments? I just don't buy that most people don't have time, I think people just can't be fucked. And I can understand that.

But at the very least, is it so much to ask that if you follow a chaptered story, you comment at least once? Subsequent chapters be damned, I can understand not commenting on every update.

    I'm speaking universally.

I am subscribed to not even one story. I bookmark everything I want to read, and I always leave a comment, even if I am too stunned by the author's writing abilities. I'm no angel though, I used to do what you said when I first joined.

I used to be so much better about commenting on stories that I read, but eventually I stopped because I no longer had the time (+ I was simply just subscribed to too many stories to comment on every single update) and that's when I stopped complaining about silent readers because I turned into one. Now, to make it up to them, I do a recommendation blog at the end of every month, which I started doing in January.

Readers are readers at the end of the day, I think that anyone who takes time out of their day to look over your work deserves credit, and then if they comment it's a bonus

I feel this. I mean let's face it, we all love feed back and want people to comment our stories but for me personally, I've never had a huge problem with my stories not getting commented. Of course I'm known because of the major fandom I'm in, but any time I ever ask for comments, I ask other Mibbians what I can comment of THEIRS first. I like commenting people's stories nearly as much as receiving comments because I know first hand how good comments can encourage an author.

I guess some people just get frustrated that their stuff isn't getting attention but people don't realize that just because you post your work publicly anywhere that it doesn't mean automatic comments/feedback. Sometimes you gotta put in work. Forcing people to comment just drives people away too. Facepalm

I don't read very much here, but I leave comments when I do find something I like. I don't expect comments, either, but it's nice having some external validation of your writing capabilities.

this is literally exactly what I thought about those rant blogs
and they always post things like "PLEASE DON'T BE A SILENT READER" and then end up being silent readers themselves.

I try to do recommend blogs, I mean I dont put a whole big thing on why to read them because I just get to distracted. But I do from time to time put a blog with a list of stories and authors to check out. As for commenting, I try to comment as much as possible wither is "I like it "Or update please" . So yeah sometimes I do expect some comments, but its not because I want comments to get readers, I have readers; I want comments like Constructive Criticism. If people choose to place "I like" Or "Update" thats fine by me. But I'm more so looking for comments like "This is captivating" and of course the cons. crit. =D
