Yay, we can have a sappy-sap-corner of sappiness.
If you liked Because of Winn-Dixie I think you'd like it. It's a pretty sweet little story that will stab you in the heart when you least expect it so beware. But the movie is really good, they did an amazing job on the movie - which I don't get to say a lot x'D.

I just hate to see that sort of thing to be romanticized. v.v It's pretty sad. I would love to read stories on just mental-health, without romance or anything because idk I guess I'm just weird but I think it's interesting to see how someone thinks and how they feel. No fluff needed whatsoever.

Well I'll be a sap with you then. Because that book is a contemporary classic. Scooter
I haven't read or watched the movie but it seemed interesting. And I just like saying "Terabithia." It sounds so cool.

Yes. Couldn't have said it better myself. Then it reinforces the stigma against reaching out for help.

Genre understatement of the century---YA romance; could mean YA romance that also romanticizes self-harm and that "being rescued" via love interest is plausible and necessary. Because who would actually read a YA novel that has the base plot / genre of "mental health" or the like, huh? Neutral No wham bam thank you ma'am in this corner. Hand

Kinda funny, I was gonna include that particular book in this blog but then I was like, "nehhh then they'll think I'm a sap." Facepalm I love that book, that and Bridge to Terabithia.

It really does... because honestly if it's teenagers doing it, and then it suddenly stops like that... it basically gives others the impression that it was either for attention or the teen was being overdramatic, which neither should really cross anyone's mind. v.v It's why self-harm shouldn't be a base plot for a romance story. I mean, if the story is about a person trying to help another cope with their depression and to stop self-harm, that's different. Not wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am.

    Wink

It had zero impact on me---I didn't like the narrator nor did I care for their struggles. Embarassed So no, not a good read to me in that sense. I really liked Because of Winn-Dixie and that was a fairly easy read.

Exactly. And it has the potential to lessen the severity of issues dealing with mental health which is totally not ok to me. It's saddening as well as disrespectful that people joke about depression or self-harm and say "just be happy / stop harming yourself" etc. If only it were solved that easily. . .

    Lol exactly.

Speak has been on my to read list for a long time, was it not a good read? Sometimes easy reads can be amazing books. Doesn't have to be ground breaking stories like A Boy Called It or The Hobbit, lmao.

Oh man, tell me about it. I get so sick, sorry to say, of stories where nearly all troubles completely vanish because of a love interest of some kind. I mean, I wish it were that easy... but it's not.

Well, I couldn't stand Speak by the same author but Wintergirls was more personal to my past situations so I was really interested in it. It's an "easy" read in terms of the vocabulary but the imagery really drew me in. Think

Oh and doesn't center on a guy "saving" her iirc so I appreciated that. With books about self-harm, I don't like how the problem disappears with the intro. of a love interest / crush. Rolling Eyes

    You're welcome.

Wintergirls, ehe? Is it that powerful of a hitter? :o I'm kinda worried about certain books like that, because it's an easy thing to mess up.

Facepalm Not what I meant oh noooo.

    Yes. c:
& definitely so. I read Wintergirls often even if it really hit me to the core; can't always read "HEA" books because they don't always showcase the human experience in a raw enough form to me.

If you haven't already, you should read The Perfect Cut. Triggering but I enjoyed it.

Nobody tags me in stuff though, aaaah. :c I appreciate it all the same regardless.
