Oh man. I'm glad you wrote this because I was feeling kinda down about these blogs. I used to write like a storm back in the day and I NEVER read anyone else's work. So I had no idea what was or wasn't cliche in the fanfiction world. And then I'd get people telling me my stuff was cliche, but they were never outright rude. I should explain that. I got a lot of comments saying that I took cliche plots and made them good. So I was cool with that. But when I see these blogs talking about hating cliches or certain things I'm just like "I've done that. I am a terrible writer. No wonder no one reads my work anymore." And it just got to my head.

So thank you for this blog. I think regardless of what people write; cliches, Mary Sues, taboo plots, that's entirely up to them. And writing is therapeutic, like you said. I never got into writing to please other people. I did it because it made me feel better. And somewhere along the line I lost sight of that by trying to please everyone else and now I'm in a writing rut. But everyone starts somewhere, and being rude about it doesn't help them to become better writers. Writers grow without assistance.

Exactly! We all start off somewhere in all manner of things. No one gets everything right the first time around. Speaking of which I found this old original fic of mine that was completely cliche and it makes me laugh rather than feel ashamed.

I find Mary Sues to be quite interesting to be honest because taking a Mary Sue and seeing what you can do with them can provide some fun results.

Yes, I feel what you're saying too. A lot of writer improve with their character development on down the line BECAUSE they started out with a Mary Sue ya know? All writers aren't going to start out as best selling authors.

I agree with this 100%! I mean I can see how reading a cliche plot can be a bit boring but that's no reason to put a story down for having a cliche plot or even a mary sue. A lot of beginning writers don't even know what a Mary Sue is.

I have so much respect for you, you have no idea.

So many good blogs today! I'm so glad you wrote this. To be honest, I feel the same too. No matter what people say, one should be proud of their work. In the end, those saying the work is 'horrible' have no right to, just as you wrote. Well said! *happy*
