I think sometimes the joke can cover up genuine concern. Like, because cats do kill birds. All the time. Just because your cat doesn't do that doesn't mean that in general, all cats are like yours, you know? So maybe they're joking around about it because to flat out rant and rave about how cats are predators and birds can't protect themselves is just... not a good outcome for anyone.
Without context, yes, that's what they're doing. But my family isn't exactly compassionate like that, especially toward me. Facepalm
    (thank you for understanding, though)

SO much yes. My dog accidentally knocked a cigarette out of a guest's hand and he said, "God damnit, dog, I'm going to fucking kill you." When I said, "Dude, stop, really. Don't say that," he just told me that the dog couldn't understand him. Yeah, I know that, but I can and she's my dog. Don't talk to her like that. Don't say stuff like that.

My dad threatens jokingly that he'll eat my chickens when they're being loud or have pooped on the paving. I don't take it to heart, because I threaten to kill his dog every time it barks.

I do feel your pain though. I adore my birds and it upsets me thinking that they'll die one day.

People actually say that? That's so messed up.

It reminds me of when my uncle and cousin jokingly pretended that they were going to kick me in the leg that I had in a splint. Like, why even do it? It's not funny.

    Anyway, Frodo is cute.
