Has he seen it yet? If not, I believe there's the option to delete the message (this is what I did when I sent a message asking about a job but then later regretted it). Wish I could remember what the option was! Might have been delete conversation or something? I'm not 100% sure if they still saw it or not but either way it's worth a shot I guess.
Don't feel bad for doing so, though. You're only human and we as humans are very curious, naturally. If I were in your position I think I'd still stick to my guns just because I'd be interested in what he does for a living now, how his life is going etc. Doesn't have to mean anything if you don't want it to!
I stay in contact with quite a few guys over Facebook; one being an ex, others who showed an interest in me for whatever reason (one plays the same game as me so that's why etc). All different reasons but most being because we have something in common or because we're just genuinely interested in how we're living now compared to back during school days.
I don't really stay in contact with the ex much but I think most of these people just come to chat with me because they've nothing better to do, which is fine with me because I get super bored almost every day. I advise just to be clear on your own personal reason(s) for contacting him and don't be afraid to make that clear to them if they make their reason clear to you.
There have been quite a few times when I've had to try to explain that I don't do relationships which has been confusingly horrible to deal with so I understand how confusing our own feelings can be.
