That's why I haven't fully given up on my dream of being a dietician. The stuff I really need to know will be stressed when I'm actually in the program and it probably won't be such a big deal that I don't know how to calculate the mols of something off the top of my head.
    And thank you! :)

I honestly think that unless the career involves required constant training it's likely that the job holder won't remember much of what they studied years ago. Just like with learning a language you can also lose or forget what you've learned if you don't continually practice, though sometimes when faced with the language again you can pick it up a lot quicker or suddenly remember certain words/phrases! I remember hardly any facts about all of the different animals I've worked with! I get so jealous of people who can remember all of these cool facts, like the albatross having the largest wing span at ____ metres or something and I'm just there like ? What's a potato? lmfao

    Good luck once again!

Well to be honest with chemistry, I'm not the only one struggling. I've heard at least half of the class talk about getting 70% or less on our last homework assignment. I feel like high school doesn't prepare you well enough for how fast-paced college is. But I know practice is important and I try, but once I get it in my head that I'm starting to lose my understanding of something, I struggle to concentrate.

    Thank you!
And I think they have unrealistic expectations in college. Like do you want me to learn the information or just pass the exam and forget it all right after?

For sure, I'm always around so message whenever! That's a good idea, I spent two years retaking high school courses and getting my electives out of the way and it's helped a ton. My anatomy teacher was like that, he would go through all the material super fast and then start on the next section while we were all trying to study for the last stuff. It was really ridiculous.

I did chem and bio in my first year of university and failed exams both first and second semester lmao. I was much better at it in school. I also did physics in year 12. I eventually quit my science degree and did arts and teaching, and then quit the teaching part and now I'm a couple months from completing my Master of Accounting.

And just from how much I've had to study with this masters degree I can say that for me, the best thing is to practice questions over and over because so much of my courses' exams are practical questions. And I tend to be able to waffle the long answer questions if I understand the practical side of it. I also write things out by hand because I find its easier to recall when all my exams are written exams. But yeah. My advice would be to practice again and again using the equations you need to know so that even if you don't understand it 100% you'll at least be familiar with it.

If you have any questions you can PM me re maths. I'm good at that :P

The thing is, the enthusiasm is there and yet it isn't. I want to be a dietician so badly but I'm afraid that I can't make it through the schoolwork to become one. I work at care center for the elderly and I outright asked our dietician if she was good at math and chemistry and she said no. I asked out diet tech if she remembered anything from anatomy and physiology and she said no. I understand I need these classes because to understand almost any concept, you need to understand the base parts first. But I feel like I'm taking all this stuff that I won't need and I'm struggling with it and it's very disheartening (if that's the right word?).

I might take you up on the messaging thing. I am not in nursing, but am actually going to school to be a dietician. Right now I'm at a community college getting some of the classes that I can out of the way at a cheaper price. I just feel like remembering all the equations for chemistry, on top of remembering all the bones for this class is a bit too much. Because we have the exam Thursday we are starting to learn new information Tuesday and I'm not sure how she expects us to retain it all.

I totally feel you. A few years ago I just had a complete meltdown which caused me to find zero interest in any of the subjects in my college foundation degree course. I was being encouraged to pull through until the end of the college year to at least get some kind of award for all of the work I had done but my mind was just not in it and I couldn't face returning after the easter break. My grades were not bad (they weren't great either) but I knew that if I stayed I'd only be kicked out of the course for failed attendances and missing deadlines.

I think you really have to look inside yourself and ask if this is right for you. What I gave above was just an extreme example of how something can go from bad to worse if you try to ignore your true feelings/thoughts about it (I originally had doubt about starting the course and my heart was never in it). You clearly still have some enthusiasm for your course, which you recognise yourself, because you seem concerned about it and are asking for help which is fantastic! You really should praise yourself for this because you're fighting and trying instead of giving up - does this not show how strong your determination can be?

I've always found it easier to learn something if I can immediately interact with it as I learn. I'm the worst at learning through viewing first and then being told to imitate the tutor's example, this is why I fail at lab experiments and need lots of assistance from peers/tutors who can help me as I do the task.

I remember using some random on-line interactive body-labelling games for the human, dog and horse bodies before and found that they helped me to remember the names surprisingly easily. So I'd recommend finding some interactive learning games and giving them a go because games always seem less dull than simply reading or revising. But do what works for you. If you don't know what works then try everything you can think of and you'll soon find out!

Good luck for your exam! Remember that universities assess and select those who apply so you must be smart enough for the classes.

I don't think that this is a direct matter of smartness, I think it's a matter of will, motivation, determination, communication, effective learning methods and management. It's so hard but try to believe in yourself more and find people who believe in you! <3

Taking breaks is always good, brains tend to turn to mush if you work non-stop.

I'm in nursing and last year I had to know all the muscles and bones (which I've pretty much forgotten by now because you honestly don't need to know every single bone ever), and so I know how crazy overwhelming that is.

I was also horrible at chemistry, I failed it in grade 11 and had to retake grade 11 chem in college and then do grade 12 chem before I could get into my program.

College is definitely insane, so I feel you on that one for sure. You can always message me, I might have a few tips that can make studying certain things a bit easier! Or you can just rant to me, lord knows I need my daily rant so I don't go insane tehe Arms
