As another person working hard to pay of the debts, I am sorry you are going through the same thing. It is no joke; it's a difficult and long road!
And I am sure my friend understands; she is a very nice person and very understanding. It's just a vicious cycle because here I am thinking "She understands...it's okay." and then I am thinking it's because she has always been such a good friend to me that I want to give her a present back, a small token of appreciation, if you will.

I don't think this is complaining at all! I know exactly how you feel. I've had countless people by my gifts but because my husband and I are so broke we aren't able to repay the favor. It does suck, and I feel horrible about it. we deal with the same shit, school,insurances, loans and what not. It's exhausting. I feel you hun, I do. I'm also sure your friend will understand.
