I have many friends who I think just tolerate me, but in reality if they were truly my friends then they would enjoy my company. You know you have a real friend when you see each other again years later and can talk like no time has passed. Maybe your old friend's girlfriend was jealous and controlling and just didn't want her to talk to you specifically. It's good to catch up with old friends but if they weren't such good friends then they should stay in the past.
