I know that the first part was sarcasm but if you didn't mean it then why did you write it in the first place. I am not trying to be mean but I was just wondering.

It's sad that so many people will actually take that first half seriously.

    Kay. People are dumb.

Sheep was defending fanfiction, and most people who are able to grasp the simple concept of sarcasm would realise so. Smiley

I'd say it's original for the plots they put in. I find it highly original to take a person out of real life and turn them into the characters you want. It's like authors basing characters on their friends, you could claim that unoriginal. It's the plot that generally keeps a reader interested, and the way the characters fit into it. Gerard Way is not actually the tooth fairy, turning him into it in a story is original, they've used the name and his features to make it easier for the reader to get across what your character looks like, without having to have paragraph after paragraph describing the character - like a lot of "original" fiction does. Some "original" fiction authors put pictures and bios of their characters in their description, that takes away from the story. In the world of fan fiction, there's so many different Gerards, Franks, Ryans, Brendons, and a whole load of other people, making the world original in so many great and interesting ways.

Fan fiction takes some originality because you have to create a story line, setting, plot, dialog, and the author of a fan fiction might also have to add a few original characters too, which needs some original thought.

Not getting mad at you for sarcastically bashing FF, just pointing that out.

I'll just point this out again: I wasn't bashing fanfiction
I was being very sarcastic in the first section of this journal.
I'm actually a fan of FF
I wrote this journal to address how misplaced half of the criticisms of FF (about how it's uncreative, etc.) are.
This isn't a flame journal so please stop taking it to be so.
    Have a nice day ^_^

    Hm.
Don't like fanfiction, don't read it.
    Simple solution.

Not always. Sometimes fanfiction writers do creative things with those characters, albeit it will always be less original than creating the characters from scratch.

In the saying the majority of fanfiction sucks, I would probably agree with you. So do the majority of romance novels, but plenty of people like that too. It's not that it's impossible to write good fanfiction or romance, it's just that most writers dont. And some readers actually enjoy the cliche. There will always be a market for cheesy stuff like that, and thus it will always exist.

I don't see any difference at all in Fanfiction and Original Fiction, to be honest. Other than the fact that you are using famous characters.. ohhh, big deal. I've seen A LOT of FF that people take some damn good time and effort into making the story. And i agree with you too. I like either one, I usually have a preference when it comes to FF, that's the only thing. So yeah, I agree with you on this, because it's true. It's just a story with different names of main characters. (:

You've got some good points there. But I must disagree with that it takes no creativity. Fanfiction does take creativty.
