I agree with you on some points- it's about wanting to be in a world where materialism rules, and then taking a step back and seeing just how whorish that world is and realizing that the world that you thought you wanted is really not what you thought it would be like. It's still commercialism, but it's about living a materialistic life because that's what you thought you wanted. At least, that's how I've always viewed the song.
