I'd recommend reading the rest of the series. Though the topics of rape and abuse stay very prominent, he's set up a brilliant plot line and it's a true shame there's not more to read from him. Every scene like that comes into play from the first book, and, if you do continue, you'll LOVE Zala in the second/third book He's such a mastermind, it's brilliant.
A book that disturbs me is my collection of Edgar Allan Poe's works. They make me cringe and I can't stop reading them
