I searched, there was nothing on directors.
So I'm curious, who are your favourite directors?
Why are they your favourite directors?
What would you consider the best film by your favourite director?

Mine are Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli work; Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle), Alfonso Cuarón (3rd Harry Potter film), Mike Newell (4th Harry Potter film) & Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings).
They all have different styles, and most of them worked on/are working on adapting my favourite books. I feel that each of them has a unique style, and in their adaptations they've stuck as close as they could to the original work but have given it their own flare.
Hayao Miyazaki especially is a genius, quite possibly the greatest animator of all time.

    So, discuss :file:

    Tim Burton also! Wow

But probably the one that I respect the most was John Hughes.

Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and David Fincher.

There are a few more but those are my top. Fincher & Aronofsky, especially. Those two really inspired me and are the whole reason I'm going to film school to be a director.

Peter Jackson, hands down. He's a genius for what he did with LOTR. In Love
I really like Baz Luhrmann too. He directed Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, and Australia.

John Roecker : I really do love his style. It's so crazy.
Danny Boyle : 28 Days Later is a visual masterpiece imo. I ADORE the guerilla style he took with it.
Gus Van Sant : Last Days is beautiful. There's barely any dialogue so it reminds me of silent films where each shot had to mean something.
M Night Shyamalan : I've loved every single one of his movies (Yes, even The Village)

Favorite directors: Scorsese, Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and probably Tony Jaa(yes, he directed)

Why? Scorsese is just amazing, hands down. Ritchie has interesting styles and the execution is amazing. Tarantino and Rodriguez for their varying styles and the fearlessness with different techniques. As for Jaa, hes just....Tony Jaa, no more to be said, one of the funnest martial artist to watch.

    Best films:
    Scorsese: Departed.
    Ritchie: Snatch.
    Tarantino: Resevoir Dogs
    Rodriguez: Desperado
    Jaa: Ong Bak 2

Peter Jackson, obviously, but not only for LOTR. I really liked what he did with King Kong as well. He helped produce District 9 as well, which was also a fantastic movie.

I can't believe no one else has said this guy: George Lucas.
But seriously, come on... he's awesome. Star Wars pwns.

Michael Bay is pretty good. I mean, not only Transformers, but Armegedon and Pearl Harbor? Those were great movies. I'm not too into horror, but I've heard those films were great too. I'm actually excited to see the new Nightmare on Elm street movie he's doing.

So far, with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan has been a fantastic director. We'll have to see where he goes from here.

Of course Steven Spielburg is amazing, as is Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino.

I think David Koepp's name should be mentioned too. The only uber famous movie he's ever directed is Secret Window, which was spectacular, but he mainly does screenplays, such as Jurassic Park, Spiderman, Panic Room, Angels & Demons, War of the Worlds, Mission: Impossible, and many others. Quite the achievement, if you ask me.

I like some of Shyamalan's films, but find others repulsive.

Emmerich was good for The Day After Tomorrow, but I think 2012 looks like a piece of crap, to be honest.

David Fincher is awesome for Fight Club and Se7en. Awesome awesome movies.

I think Stefen Fangmeier should go shoot himself in the foot for making Eragon such a crappy movie after the book. So many people have stuck up for him saying "Eragon would be a really hard movie to make good after the book." Yeah, well if Peter Jackson can make LOTR a respectable trilogy, then Stefen should have done a better job.

Also, I don't know what happened with Stephen Sommers, but he failed epically on G.I. Joe. Seriously, that movie was so bad. I was seriously disgusted after leaving the theater. I mean, he did The Mummy, The Jungle Book, and Van Helsin... what the hell happened? -shakes head-

Actually, Sean Penn is a great director. Cute

Del Toro is pretty cool too. Mr. Green

I'm pretty interested in seeing New York, I Love You because of all the different celebrity directors, including Natalie Portman.

The Coen Brothers - O Brother, Where Art Though?, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading... all incredible. Their other films are amazing too.
David Fincher, for Fight Club and Seven.
Sam Mendes' work on American Beauty was incredible, as well. Oh, and Jarhead.

I really don't know of that many directors. XD
But the ones that come to mind are Peter Jackson (I think King Kong was way too long, but the scenery was fantastic), Alfonso Cuaron (directed my favourite Harry Potter movie) and George Lucas (well...it's Star Wars, enough said).
