The Hardest Chapter

I was reading this story, and the writer wrote in the A/N that the first chapter is the hardest for her, but I find the first chapter the easiest.

So what's the hardest chapter or part for you to write in a story?

For me its probably the second chapter. The first chapter is the easiest, and my favorite to be honest, but the following chapter is always, always, always a let down.

I'm good at writing the first chapter because it's usually the first thing I think of for the story. Or, even if it's not, I generally have an idea of how I want to open, and I really enjoy writing it, especially if I can do something fun like start at the end of the story or throw the readers right into some situation. But the second chapter kills me, because I often start at the end of the story and then I start explaining how the characters got there... meaning the second chapter is like the real beginning. I always jump to the middle of the story and work on that... and the second chapter takes ages to get written. D:

^ I agree with both of you. For me, it's a matter of making the second chapter as good as the first. I have such appauling problems with balancing out areas of the plot and time spent on them.

I hate writing first chapters because their so boring its just background information. It's easier for me to start in the middle or the end and work back because by the middle I know where I'm going.

It's any chapter that is a stepping stone. When I write a chapter that is to get me from point A to point B and that is the sole point of the chapter, it is the most difficult. Because I have to balance story-telling with force.

I sometimes have problems writing the bits inbetween. I've usually got the introduction down fairly easily and most often I know exactly how I want to end a story within a few months (or less, very rarely its more) of starting it. Sometimes I also figure out other events both minor and major that I'd like to see or that must occur; those usually aren't hard to write either. It's always the stuff that connects them. I have to make myself space things out properly and it can be really hard to write or be motivated to write sometimes.

A lot of it is context, for me. I always have a beginning, the end is usually already well thought-out...it's the middle chapter(s) that gets me. And then the big points in the plot.

For me, for my NML story, the hardest thing to write is the chapter where I reveal the gender of the main character, Jackie. I have bits and pieces of it done, and it's just so damn hard. I don't know how I'll be able to finish it, when the time comes for it.

The second chapter is always the hardest for me. I usually have the story set up in my head so that points C through Z are lined up and ready to go, but A and B are missing in action. I guess it's because I've read so many 'how to write' books that the pressure to open up the story seems so daunting that i don't want to even be bothered with it, until the last second.

The third. I can get one chapter and then a pretty decent second one, but the third just stumps me.

The chapter where nothing happens or the "filler" chapter is the hardest for me to write. I want to be "on schedule" with my story, so I make sure to not just jump from one month to the next without some action. I always add a chapter to connect the two timelines.
It's a habit, but I hate it. Nothing interesting happens, and I'm afraid I might bore the readers.

I always, always, always end up writing and re-writing the last chapter xD I just need to get it perfect, and I'll spend ages on the very last line.

For me, it's the parts that lead up to an event. The downtime between Event A and Event B.

Same here. I always get stuck at chapter 4, 5, or 6. The only story where I ever got past that point was with a short story that only lasted 8 chapters.

Sometimes it's the first chapter and sometimes it's the second, third, or last. It just depends on the story for me, and where I'm trying to get it to go.

The chapters leading up to the end always cause me trouble.
I can do final chapters and epilogues fine, but it's tying up loose ends and leaving everyone and everything in a suitable place that always takes me forever.

I have a problem with the very last chapter because I want the ending to be as wonderfully written as possible. I end up adding all this unneeded detail and it sounds stupid so I tend to write and rewrite the last parts over and over again o.O

Everything between the first and last chapters. I can sort of plan what events I want to happen, and I almost always plan my ending, but I have no clue on what happens in the middle, and I get stuck. Also, I hate writing chapters were something "life-changing" (or plot changing) is supposed to happen, because I think I write them poorly and I feel like I let down my readers sometimes.

The first chapter's the hardest for me, because I know what I want to happen, I just don't know how to get it to that point and start it in that way. The last chapter is also infinitely hard because I agonise over it for ages trying to make it good.

I find the first two chapters insanely easy to write, and then I get stuck on the third. Once the third's written, I usually am pretty alright.

Until the last chapter. It's so hard. Because it's the very end, I don't know how to end it, basically. Sometimes I fall in love with my characters and don't want it to end and then other times I just have no clue with how I'm going to end it. It's just so, well, final.
