- Billie Joe Armstrong:
- The idea of "selling out" , to me anyway, is when a band stops caring about making music that means something to them and starts making music to make money. The money and fame is all they care about, not the music, not the fans, not the world around them...
...
They made a musical? Who cares? They did something out of the norm. Something different and original. Something that most people would never think of doing. And they were completely involved with it from the planning to the execution of the musical. Billie co-wrote the book with Michael Mayer. He didn't just sign rights over and ask for a check, y'know?
I really agree with you. Personally, I'm not the biggest Green Day fan, but I really think it's cool that they did a musical. I don't think it was selling out. I mean, Tom Waits has done two musicals, I think (he just wrote the music, though). I don't think he's sold out because of that.
I think it's really easy to think that a band has sold out when they're only evolving. Especially when you get bands/artists that have been around as long as Green Day or even Tom Waits.
Green Day has been around for 20 years. They've gotten older, gotten married, had children. Of course some of their views and opinions and experiences are going to change, and of course that's going to translate -at least a little bit- into their music. A lot of people accused Tom Waits of selling out after Swordfishtrombones, when in all reality, he had just grown out of his barfly stage and into a healthier time in his life. His music changed to reflect that. People change, musicians are people, so of course it's going to translate into their music.
