Ryker's fingers shook as he tried to calmly pull his motorcycle over to the side of the road. If his heart could beat it would be screaming.
Thank God it was him, thank God Kalyani hadn't gone looking. His eyes were not super-charged but it wouldn't take a Vampire to see the mangled body lying a few feet away in the ditch. She wasn't moving, she wasn't making a sound...
Digging into his pocket Ryker found it hard to extract his phone, and even harder to dial the correct number as he stared at the unmoving girl curled into a ball at the bottom of the grassy hill next to the gravel road.
Swallowing hard before he spoke Ryker took careful, slow steps towards the overwhelming smell of burnt flesh and blood. If anyone had to find her like this it should be him, he was the warrior, the oldest, the soulless one who knew the moment she didn't answer her phone what had happened. This should be easy for him, he'd sent so many men to their graves screaming... She was already silent. This was for the best. Why should she matter, if not today it would be tomorrow perhaps.
Alice was a trusting child; pretty little girls who were naively kind always ended up dead. This time it just so happened not to be Sofie's fault. He'd thought it had been her fault. Here he'd been so preoccupied by Sofie's threats he hadn't paid any attention to other obvious dangers.
"Stupid, how could I have been so stupid?" he whispered to himself, pacing not daring to get any closer, girls didn't just lie in ditches, she was dead and now he didn't know what to do.
Usually in this situation Sofie would have him dig a hole and toss her in. But a Vampire didn't put her there and this was Alice. At least it used to be her, now it was just a body. It was only a body, there was no reason to involve himself anymore. He couldn't help her, even so what was he was going to tell Bambi or Shion?
"Kaly-" His voice cracked the second he heard her on the other end.
"I-I found her, Alice she's, Kalyani--I found her and..." a soft sob cut through the air like a knife (it wasn't his), silencing the Vampire before he could ask her to call the police, before he could ask her what she wanted him to do with the corpse.
The phone falling from his grasp, let out an audible clunk as it bounced across the gravel. Shaking Ryker dropped the phone a few more times before he was able to lift it to his face.
"She's- oh God," he moaned almost to himself as he took a careful step towards the now squirming mass. "Alissa?" he croaked, eyes staring in utter shock at the not-so-dead child. The wall of forced calm he'd created blown to hell. Dead he could handle, dead he could do nothing about. He was not obligated to do anything if she was dead, he wasn't obligated to feel anything.
Why wasn't she dead?!"A-Alice," he pleaded bottom lip trembling as he mentally begged for an answer. He wished he couldn't see through the shadows, couldn't see her pain. Now he was only a few feet away, panic written across his face. He didn't know what to do, she was alive, her blood was still pumping, poring out of her like a roaring river into his ears, the smell of burnt flesh and hair was not something only Vampires would notice it permeated the air, making him physically gag, and yet she was still alive. Why was she still alive?
That's when the words bubbled up from her shaking husk of a body like a fountain, "make it stop," she begged her usually sugar-sweet voice twisted into something which sent the boy to his knees. Panic ate away at his shock as sunlight would to his skin.
"S-Sh-She's not dead, and I thought she was dead a-a-and I was going to deal with it, it's my job to deal with it Kalyani! But she's alive, and bleeding and burned and dying and I don't know what to do! She asked me to stop it, I don't know how to stop it? How do I stop it?!" Ryker sobbed into the phone barely able to tell the teacher where they were before his shaking fingers dropped the phone. He didn't bother trying to pick it back up, instead dug his knees into the grass harder.
"Hey-Hey," he whispered hands inches from her skin, fear in his eyes as he bent over the trembling girl afraid to touch her, afraid to not. All along her body were large hand shaped burns, cuts, bruises, blood. His throat felt dry, the emotion he wanted to push out was beating him, the crawling feelings made it difficult for him to think clearly. He needed to inspect her, he needed to see what was really wrong. She wasn't dead, she wasn't dead and if he didn't save her this would be his fault too.
"Alleycat, I'm going to help you but I need to touch you, i-it's going to hurt," he explained trying to shut out the sound of Kalyani's voice yelling into the other end of the phone, even though it wasn't against his ear it was so loud, everything was so loud. She was so loud, why was Alice so loud?
Ryker couldn't stop his hands from shaking as her screams started, first low and startled then blood curling, as he pulled her out of her curled position and onto her back. She didn't fight him as he rolled her off of her side, and onto her back forcing her small body to uncoil even as she convulsed with pain.
Ryker needed to see the damage for himself, he needed to know now before his heart was ripped in two, before he gave too much, before he gave into false hope surrounding another soon to be dead little girl. Beating up thugs was one thing, dealing with Sofie was another, physical pain was something he'd grown used to but the unexplained tightness in his chest he felt and desperate words he muttered while quickly evaluating her body was not.
"Oh Alleycat," he whispered fingers still tangled in her singed hair, as he tried to reposition her, his other hand pulling carefully from behind Alice's knees. Her sweat slid across his arm as he pulled away from her soaked jeans, he knew it wasn't all sweat but at that moment he didn't care. Her jeans were unzipped, a new fear he hadn't even processed now registered.
"Okay, there you go," he whispered fingers checking her vitals, before pulling away, long blonde hair which fell from his hands made him growl. The only way her hair would have been damaged like that was if they had pulled her by it... Hands of fire.
The burns which littered her body, burned through clothes, and singed hair told him all he needed to know.
Grabbing for the phone Ryker knew Kalyani was still there, his mind unable to process what she was telling him, so he spoke instead, "It was fucking Fae, she's burning up, there's no Ice Kalyani, why is there no ice?" He whispered eyeing the sweat falling from her face. His hand sweeping across her feverish forehead. "Seelie, it was Seelie, it was Hiroki's friends, it had to have been! He hates her, he told them to do this, you've seen how he looks at her, he hates her and now he's tried to kill her because-because," a sob escaped Ryker's throat as he looked down at his blood covered hand, her blood was on his hand. Just above the top of her jeans was where the blood was coming from, a stab wound so strangely placed.
"Make him fix her, he has to know how to fix her, why would they do this to her? She never hurt anyone, she's a child," Everything was becoming foggy. He couldn't look at her, couldn't control what he was feeling, couldn't keep his cool. Blood there was too much blood, it coated his fingers, slick warm, so warm.
Alice had stopped screaming, she was so quiet, but still breathing, still pumping blood, he could hear it. He couldn't let things become foggy, not now! Not when she was still breathing, she needed him to do something, anything... He couldn't do this.
He stared at the liquid dripping from his palm in an almost hypnotizing daze. Trembling the phone was forgotten again as he ran his palm across his dry, chapped lips he felt his eyes roll with euphoria, the blood sinking into his skin. His tongue lapping up every single drop before looking for more, he wanted more. She had so much more, he wouldn't even need his teeth the blood was already free, Alice was his friend she'd want this, she'd said she was his friend, she'd offered once, he'd turned her down, she wouldn't mind now. Alice would do anything anyone asked her to, that was Alice, she always wanted to help, she was so sweet,
like her blood.Bending forward Ryker froze, as he saw the pain etched upon the burned girl's face, the fog lifting replacing itself with repulsion.
What was he doing?"Oh God, oh God! I-I'm going to get you help," he whimpered in disgust, falling on his butt with shock, backpedaling.
Relief hit him as he heard a car door slamming.
"Ka-Kalyani, we're down here," He moaned turning his face away from the girl, not daring to look at her even as he squeezed her hand.
