I, uh, have given up on OC/canon. Which is why I stic k to slash or brotherly love, on Mibba at least. I always wrote het for other fandoms, but the only options here are slash or OC romance. GAH.

There's this one particular OC that keeps popping up in my stories. She's always Belinda, and she came in the form of a little girl, an old lady, a cheating girlfriend, a fan, a hotel clerk... I dunno, she's like my signature character. Anybody else have a character like that?
    I used to have one.
    Her name was...
    [insert BLUSH here]
    Druscilla.

Yeah... but that was over five years ago, so don't slay me too bad.
She wasn't me, just had my name.
And my name went perfectly with the fandom I was writing at the time.
Now that I think about it....yeah. It does. *goes off to use your name in a fic for that fandom*

I sometimes use myself as a minor minor character. Only to fill really small roles. It's an addiction.
A character of Belinda, the one in 'When the Savior Is Damned' is based off me. :lmfao I swear that's exactly how I'd react when I meet MCR.
I think all authors have a character that is very similar to their own personality.

I agree. But I think most self-inserts are Mary/Gary Sues. It's better to try and create a completely new character with its own personality.

No, most authors create characters that embody what they want to be or want in general.

For example, rich brat who's got everything and whose parents never bug her and love her to bits and she's so pwnage that the lead character falls in love right away. Or a poor lowly self-loathing beauty that catches the attention of everyone but doesn't realize it or whatever. Actually, that's kind of like Gina. :tehe:

This is also true... I think the other overused ones are the ones druscilla talked about.

I agree with overused characters. I try not to use them, but I think I may be guilty for some cases.

I recently joined forces with Die to create a story and we were talking about something that wouldn't be cliche. Or something, and the character we ended up coming up with was a girl who had her life destroyed by falling in love with someone who never cared, or used her. Ofcourse this character is only in the early stages. But I think she is different. She's tuff, until she's broken..in some ways.

I like characters which are original.

I think we all like characters that are original. But they're just so hard to find...

There are extremely rare instances when a Mary Sue will work.
    Extremely rare.
Like, as rare as waking up to find yourself drowning in a million dollars.
But every character needs a flaw.
The common link in stories is conflict.
And you can't have conflict if everything is just oh-so-fucking perfect, can you?

The only instances where MSues work is when they are being shoved through woodchippers, flattened with steamrollers, and then fed to rabid fangirls.
Conflict is not just the common link of stories; it's what drives stories. Action does not make a story better, contrary to popular belief. It's always conflict.
And you're right, druscilla. You can't have conflict if everything is perfect.

Well now I need a character name. Not just a regular one, though. It needs to be really...um...cool-sounding? Yeah, that's it. Cool-sounding. Not evil exactly, but still cool. My coauthor is ignoring me completely, so I can't get anything from her, and it reads weird if I have no name there. Hm.

    How about...Druscilla! no, hehe...

Nakshatra? It means star. You could call her Nicky or Nick-nack for short.

I really tried hard to not make the Belinda in When the Savior Is Damned sound like a Mary Sue, even if she was just there for like, one chapter. I didn't describe her as extraordinarily pretty or freakishly charming, but just as an obsessed fan who gets tongue-tied when she meets her favorite band. I actually kinda need criticism, so if anyone wants to check her out, she's in chapter 11 of the story I keep mentioning. :D

If your co-author is ignoring you, then whats the point of writing with them? .[/offtopic]

Have you thought about making up a name. For my new joint story I am writing we were talking about what we should name our main character and it had to be something different, that suited this character. In the end we came up with Del, which is actually both our names joined. My nickname is Chel, and hers is Die. So we got Del..which is a really strange name but ended up fitting this character so well.

Her laptop's been broken, I just learned. Won't turn on. O_O

I always try to come up with my own ideas before asking other people. But I was on a deadline and I needed help. I finally got a good one from another user, I will kill for her, and it's super-awesome. "Garith."

The only reason combining our names wouldn't work is because we're both girls, and our names combined wouldn't make sense. Christine and Amy. Plus the once-nameless character is a guy. Thanks anyway, though.

I've only really inserted myself in one story which was intentional.

    :D

It was 'Doomsday', that Sruti's read.

Because it was mainly based on fact.

Does anyone find that characters who like pink and have blonde hair are in short supply in Mibba?

I've decided to write one in.

They're not in short supply. They're just never the main character and never the good character.
