You go down to the last setion in the layout maker (the chapter one) and go to the Text drop down menu. Go to the first text color slider (the one that's for regular texr, not links) and just slide the transparency slider all the way over so it's completely transparent!
Just so you know, if you edit your finished layout, the transparency slider will go back to the default setting so the chapter numbers will be visible again. You'll have to slide it back over to make them disappear again (and the same goes for any text settings you might have added [like "small caps", "bold", "capitalize", etc.]).
