"My mother almsot died," Katherine stated. "There was an assassination attempt on his life and my mother put herself in harms way to keep him safe."

Matt frowned. "I'm so sorry," he apologized.

"People can be cruel," Katherine stated. "It just shows my father's true character that his heart turned dark and cruel as well."

"I'm sure there's still good in him somewhere," Matt said. "You just have to draw it out."

"I see it sometimes but as quickly as I notice it disappears."

Matt nodded his head. "I understand," he said.

"Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if we weren't royalty," she admitted. "Life would still be difficult but a different kind of difficult I would welcome."

Matt nodded his head. "I would appreciate where you come from," he said. "This isn't the kind of life you would want, trust me."

"Being married off to someone who would most likely beat and rape me isn't an ideal situation no matter how you look at it," Katherine argued.

Matt nodded. "I guess so," he said.

"I live in a world where anything a man says is law and I am expected to just go along with it all," Katherine stated. "All I am expected to do is being a loyal wife who pushes out as many children as her husband wishes."

Matt frowned. He wished things were different for her. He wished he could help. "At least you'll get to have children," he said.

Katherine frowned at Matt's words. "What do you mean," she asked. "Did they castrate you?"

Matt chuckled but shook his head. "No," he said. "Servants aren't allowed to have children. If you ever wonder why men and women disappear after having children, it's because they get killed. We're the minority, and they want to keep it that way."

Katherine's eyes widened, her hand quickly covering her mouth as a gasp escaped her lips. "That's evil!"

Matt nodded his head. "I know," he said. "And besides, I've devoted my life to taking care of your family, so I couldn't have a family even if I wanted to."

Katherine shook her head. "That's not right," she stated. "You deserve to have a family of you want one."

"It's not my choice," Matt said. "It doesn't matter. I couldn't bear bringing a child into the world knowing they wouldn't have anything to live for." He was being so honest with her and it was completely surprising him how calm she was about it. If he shared his thoughts with anyone else, they would whip him.

"What if I could find a way for you to have a higher position in the house," Katherine asked. "One that would actually pay you in money not just food."

Matt shook his head. "Please," he said. "Don't worry about me. I will survive."
