I'd also love it if the character was male. A lot of abuse fics and self-harm/eating disorder fics focus on females so I'd love to see someone write a fiction surrounding a male with these afflictions and have it presented in an accurate way.
(Not sure that self-promoting is allowed on this thread but xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx. Serious warnings on some of them for rape, abuse, incest, etc., but they all follow the theme of self-harm/eating disorder/abuse surrounding males. Also a good few of them are old, so my writing isn't as good as it is now... I think I'm obsessed with writing these types of things, so. yeah.)

I agree with wanting to see more of this on here, so if anyone has anymore that they know of I'd love to hear from you.

I want to see stories that are less focused on the plot. I know this sounds very weird, but I enjoy a great story that is still great without much happening in it. Also, stories that focus solely on a plot and don't provide an ulterior theme for the reader to cherish fade very quickly in my mind.

So what if the character has a bad thing or three happen to him/her? What am I to learn from it? Sure, it may make me pity the character, but I'll also pity the author for the chances they didn't take to really make something of the moment for them, the character, and the reader. Drive the point home baby!

I want something provocative on Mibba. Something that'll still be provocative as time goes on.

I'd like to see stories set in the UK that aren't set in London. I've read one or two, but most of the stories set in the UK are set in London and that makes me sad. I'd especially love to see some good stories set in Scotland. I mean, I understand that London is a major city, but there are more cities and countries than just London and England contained within the UK.

I'd also like to see some stories where the setting is an integral part of the plot itself, stories where culture is a major impactor in the decisions made by the characters. I don't see that enough on here and I'd love to see that appear more in the stuff that I'm reading.

Satire stories. I'd like to see more stories that are really just poking fun at certain issues or ideas.

I would love to see more stories in which the characters live in a "poor" environment. Most characters on mibba live in your average middle class world and interact with others in the middle class world. And so often, there's a character in a poor area that then get "saved" by someone that's either rich and/or famous. It's a tad annoying to only ever see stories with poor characters being constantly miserable about being poor and having that be the entire story-line with the resolution being the poor character having to be saved from being poor. It would be so amazing to start seeing stories where a main character is at least fairly poor and doesn't sit around an wallow in that fact. I'd especially love to see a poor character who's plot-line doesn't totally revolve around being poor; where it's just a fact of their life that's mentioned and used for background, but not essential to the story's development.

I think it's hard to find a poor person in real life where their life doesn't revolve around being poor. There's a saying like 'when you have money you don't have to think about it, but when you don't have money you think about it all the time', which I find to be very true. If you aren't sure where your next meal is coming from or if you're going to have enough money to pay rent for the second month in a row, plus your electric bill, it's hard to focus on anything else. Most of the "wallowing" is depression.

No one really aims to be poor, do they? Unless they are going for that moneyless lifestyle, which some do. So wouldn't it be natural for the character to want to raise themselves out of poverty?

(I've actually thought often about writing a poor character once I'm no longer poor; right now it's too close to home. But I don't think my character would be able to not have being poor being a major part of the story. Being poor is my daily consumption.)

    @ gonna hear dru roar.
I really should have elaborated more and simply worded things differently, because I knew this would be brought up, but I didn't want it to come off like I was trying to beat a dead horse. That was obviously not the case, so bad on my part for not elaborating.

I don't necessarily mean that the fact that the character is poor doesn't need to be mentioned at all in the story - I don't even think you could write an accurate portrayal of that lifestyle without incorporating it into the story. I mainly meant that I'd like to see more stories where the main plot-line is more than the character being poor. Every time I see a story that has a poor character, the only plot that exists is "I'm poor so I must be rescued and oh how convenient, here's my love interest to come and steal me away".

And I wasn't trying to say that people want to be poor or that a character should be portrayed as such. What I should have said was that I want to see more characters that aren't constantly striving to escape it (which trust me, I know how strong that feeling is for most people). For example, the character could be part of a family that has lived in poverty for generations, so he/she grows up and comes to terms with the fact that he/she is most likely not going to be "rescued". That's not to say that his/her struggles with living in that environment need to be excluded.

I guess I really would just like to see some poor characters that are dealing with being poor (which can and should be woven throughout the story) but also can have something else happening in their lives that can be the main plot.

I get what you're saying, and it would be interesting to see that.

My family's from the Dominican Republic and grew up in poverty. I remember being a kid and getting excited because my dad brought home a pack of Double Bubble gum for me and my sisters and thinking that it was a great week because I got to eat candy. I didn't think about being poor or not when I was a kid; it was the norm.

I actually completely agree with you. I grew up poor (it was just me and my mom, and my mom works as a housekeeper), and I'm technically still poor because I just graduated college, still live with my mom, and have yet to find a job, and while growing up poor contributed to who I am today, if my life was a story, being poor wouldn't be the main plotline. It's a factor, but there's a lot more to my life and who I am as a person than just being poor.

    --

I wish there were more characters with children who played a role in the story aside from just being there, if that makes any sense. If kids are mentioned in a story, it's usually either just pregnancy or the kid's mentioned a couple times to be cute and then is never seen again.

I absolutely adore young children, and I'd just like to see more of them in fics tehe

I love stories with people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields. I see some scientists, a few mathematicians and maybe a hacker here and there but what about engineers?

Aerospace engineers? Working on one already. As for scientists, well, you know my Dr. Collier.

I agree entirely with Thylacine, as someone who appreciates well-written science fiction and science fiction with a complicated series of subplots and trickery. Most of the time, stories either focus on or contain some sort of romantic interest. (I can't remember the last time I wrote romance.) I'd kill to see someone write a science fiction about something other than zombies, the Apocalypse, or nuclear warfare.

Yes, thank you for all of your delightful STEM characters. And agreed on the last part as well. I'd especially like to see more cyberpunk.

I wish people would put more stock into imagery centered around senses other than just sight, especially smell. Smell's the sense that's the most tied to emotions and memories anyway File

I would love to see that in stories as well. I think that scenario could break some of the stereotypes within culture groups.

I wish more people wrote about adult topics and subject matter and had characters over the age of say, twenty-one.

I also wish that there was more variety in the fandoms people choose to write in. There have been so many instances where I've wanted to read about someone, but I'll search and there will be absolutely nothing.
