What Do You Think of Sex in Stories?

I think that sex, as a part of human nature, ends up being part of any story, even if it's not directly written out. I think that sex scenes are okay, as long as they're true to the progression of the story (a relationship that's going stronger, a flashback a character remembers that's somehow important in the present time of the story) or true to the character's personality (a hooker who falls in love, a guy who does nothing but one-night stands, just as long as not all the one-night stands are accounted for in the story). As long as it's not just some random sex scene that's just slapped into the middle of a story, I think it's just fine. Now... I am guilty of that in one of my stories that I wrote when I was in eighth grade, which happened to be a Frerard... But then again, aren't most fan-fictions written by younger authors filled with poorly and somewhat awkwardly-written sex scenes? (No offense what so ever to younger authors or fan-fictions. I like reading them, and I still write fan-fictions, though mine are a lot better written compared to my early one.)

I think that sex scenes can be a good thing if they're well-written and not just random fluff to fill up space. Unless, of course, one is writing an erotic novel that's mostly sex anyway.

I've written a few in my stories... I just try to keep them from being too crude, which can be awkward at times.

In my opinion, sex in stories can be extremely uncomfortable for readers when it's not done tastefully. Often times I find I can't continue reading a story because I feel awkward with what the author has written. When it's incorporated at inappropriate times or occurs too frequently, I stop reading. I agree that if the characters have a legitimate reason for having sex, it's fine, but when author's just write it to write it, it's gross. Also, I find that a lot of sex scenes are written by writers that aren't necessarily that developed or skilled and therefore have no base structure to build sex scenes off of.

As long as stories are rated accordingly, I can appreciate the art of sophisticated adult fiction. Very Happy

I prefer vague, not incredibly detailed sex scenes unless I'm reading PWP. It's just the kind of mood I prefer. It's amazing to see how people write the same acts in new ways, with new words, even with new interpretations. But it's not really a requirement for me to love a story. Most of my favorite ones don't.

But if I am reading a PWP, I like it best when it's different or adventurous, not the usual missionary-position, one-orgasm-then-go-to-bed thing. Toys, fetishes, outlandish locations... Make it kinky, people Naughty

I think there's something to say for even the acknowledgment of sex in stories. Even if it doesn't go into detail. Even if it's never even alluded to. I mean, when you can just understand that it is there in the background, another part of life. Because that's what it is. I think there's a lot to say for that.

Example; when two characters wake up and get out of bed in the morning and you can just tell they've had sex the night before through their interactions, but not through anyone even discussing it.

As far as sex in stories goes . . . well, we all know I'm a fan. Coffee

^Lol I love that. You can just describe someone just wearing a shirt with no pajamas, or mussed up hair, or someone wanting to put the sheets in the laundry...

    Implied things. They're wonderful.

Or even when, like, one character looks at another. And there's an understanding that sex exists. Like, if Ryan were to see Brendon at school and he just widened his eyes slightly. And it never went any further than that, as far as discussion. There's no mention of sex. He might not even be thinking about sex. But there is the acknowledgment of the existence of such.

I swear, this makes sense as I'm thinking it.

As much as I'm a fan of kinky sex in the bedroom as well as in stories, it's obvious sometimes that the author is trying too hard and is pulling out ALL the stops to make it seem interesting, when it's just cliched kink.

Personally, I think it takes particular talent to write a good kinky sex scene that doesn't come off as forced or cliched.

If it's a BDSM sex scene, I hate it when they don't "correctly" portray it. I mean, if it's a BDSM sex scene in a relationship. They just make it all this kinky shit and then they never remember that the characters actually love each other and this is an intimate exchange.

I don't like it when it reads like a template of a certain porn vid, as you mentioned lmfao Like, in D/S fics, more often than not it's all "I want you to come for me, you're my good little boy" or "fuck me please" etc. etc. and they don't sound like how the characters should be.

I like when characters take a kink or a sex scene and make it their own. Like a bit of laughter or awkwardness when someone's handcuffed just because that's how their dynamic works.

I just think there needs to be more well-written Ryden BDSM fic in the world. (I read one where Ryan was a sex kitten once. With ears.)

Some kinks do scare the shit outta me though. I don't remember the name of it, but it became all the rage on chokemyfiction for awhile, which is my preferred kink community on LJ. Where, like, you insert a rod through the tip of someone's penis. O_O

I don't think it shouldn't not be written. Like, one of my best friends online right now I met because people were giving him shit for writing scat and such. I won't read his stuff, but I think it's amazing that he has the balls to write it.

But I just can't read the things that scare me. XD

I forgot what fandom and what characters were involved, but I read a fic like this where the rod was shaped like a snake or some shit lmfao

yes sex sells but its not necessary in my opinion lots of people are saying that it adds depth to the characters and yes the before and after can help develope the character but you don't need detailed sex in the middle to make the story effective :S for example i will right make out scenes but when the have sex it goes a bit like this-

Juliana stood in the window of Frank’s study and watched them play on the well manicured lawn. She sighed. Frank looked up from his desk concerned. She sighed again. He stood up silently and approached her wrapping his arms around her and kissing her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair. Her sigh turned from one of worry to pleasure and she turned around and kissed him lightly. He kissed her forehead and held her tightly.
“What’s wrong Jewel?” he asked his wife using a hand to smooth the worried frown from her face. She smiled weakly at him.
“I’m worried about Bianca, she should be in town having more of her season but she insists she doesn’t want to this year. And I can understand that but how else will she find a husband? She makes such a good mother, I mean you have seen her with the children but she insists she doesn’t need to attend the season to find a husband love will find her. But what if it doesn’t?”
“She’s right Juliana love finds those who wait. Leave her be she seems perfectly happy. Now I have just the way to make you happy and stop you worrying.” She opened her mouth to question him but he silenced her with a kiss and pushed her down on to the wide window seat. Juliana had started smiling already.
    -
She could see Juliana and Frank in an upstairs window. They didn’t look very comfortable, but Juliana’s face was full of pleasure. Then she caught a glimpse of leg and realised what they were doing. She looked away quickly, focusing on the children, blushing in private embarrassment. Shock numbed her, it was broad day light and they did it so regularly. She didn’t understand why. Her mother had once tried explaining the act to her and she was completely terrified by the idea now. Yet when she heard Frank and Juliana down the hall way at night they sounded like they derived extreme pleasure from it. It confused her.

this is an extract from my story left at the crooked pine and you can tell what is happening but without the detail and still all the emotions :D do you think that is enough? jules x

Meaningless sex in stories I just don't like. I mean, I rather read a story that builds up to it, and shows the intimacy and passion in a relationship. I don't like the meaningless type thats of one night stand nature and is just like reading porn.

I don't think it's necessary as such, but then a lot of things aren't necessary in stories. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be there.

I like sex scenes between people who aren't necessarily dating. I think it can show more than a sex scene between people who have been in a relationship for a long time.

If the story I'm writing right now didn't have sex (or sex acts) there would be no story. But there's also more to the story than just sex, even though the focal point is a sex act.

I'm shit at writing sex scenes so I usually just imply them and go into detail about hat happens just before and after they actually, physically have sex.

But yeah, I think it's got to be in there, even if it's just implied, not even mentioned, because it's just something that makes us up. There would be something missing if there weren't those urges within a character. I actualy have a part in my newest story where I follow Brendon's sexual fantasies because they're there and I can't just ignore them.

I agree. I mean, I love writing explicit sex scenes, but I think even just acknowledging the existence of sex adds a lot to the story.
