I'm for it. It will have a better affect than continuing keeping it illegal.

Well, people will probably stop smoking as much to 'be cool'.

The effects of alcohol and "weed" aren't that drastic, which is why alcohol is legal. "Weed" is illegal why?

I'm for the legalization of marijuana. I've been for the legalization since before I even tried it [which I have done once]. I don't think the health effects are serious enough for this drug to be illegal, although I think it should be controlled in much the same way alcohol is. I think it should be legal to smoke it at 21 and you should not be able to drive while under the influence.

    Thoughts?
    Why 21?
Because that's the legal age to drink and I compare marijuana to alcohol, not cigarettes. It impairs you like you alcohol. Cigarettes don't impair you.

    You live in America...

I think, along with the drinking age, it should be eighteen. Like in Europe...

I seriously think drugs should be legalized.
I mean we are allowed to have alcohol which is intoxicating like drugs, and cigarettes, which is just as addictive.

^^ I'm all for the two above statements too.
Drinking in a bar in the UK is 18 but now in supermarkets and some shops, they won't sell you unless for 21. Some supermarkets have even moved the limit up to the age of 25.

    I disagree.
I don't think it should be legalised.
It's a drug - it affects mental ability to function at a 'normal' level.
It renders people useless, and in the long term causes schizophrenia, and all sorts of other shit.

It's stupid to legalise it, I think.

Alcohol is also a drug. It "affects mental ability to function at a normal level".
Every time you drink you kill more brain cells, and in the long term it can cause brain damage if you become dependent.

The point I'm trying to make is that legal drugs like alcohol can cause bad health affects on people as well.

I'm not saying we should make alcohol illegal or weed legal, I'm just playing devil's advocate.

    Alcohol definitely has effects.

On a you-hit-close-too-home-and-I'm-going-to-shove-why-down-your-throat level, my mother's a chronic alcoholic and that marred our relationship, her life (on the dole, pretty bloody incompetent, cannot function to any extent without a certain level of alcohol in her system... pretty sad considering - turns out, she's highly intelligent :-|) and her health (she has liver cirrhosis, she's still drinking, she shows symptoms to an advanced stage... it's essentially not-so-slow suicide).

Also, on a far less personal note, loads of crap happens due to drinking... fights, deaths (both accidental and due to alcohol poisoning), all sorts of accidents. The British government spends a lot of money on a variety of problems that are caused by alcohol.

Cannabis also has effects. It demotivates you, causes paranoia, hallucinations... is linked with schizophrenia. Y'know, it's a drug. Drugs have side effects. Ever met proper stoners whose lives are pretty sad because they blaze all the bloody time? Exactly!

However, while alcohol is awful and blah blah blah, I don't think it should be made illegal. This is a tangent to marijuana, but by now - it's such a common place drug and is so socially acceptable to the point where you'd have many people breaking the law and consuming dodgy products at dodgy prices and in dodgy circumstances. Didn't they make it illegal in the States in the... 1920s? Forgive me, my history knowledge is lacking and I will probably have to edit this when I go and do my research, but... and that didn't work, did it? It was illegally imported, illegally made...

So by this point, alcohol really is too socially acceptable to kill in established drinking nations without causing a massive backlash.

But many drugs are illegal, this creates a taboo, this makes it harder to get hold of them, this creates drug crime. By legalising drugs, you'd kill the industry, thus helping a lot of people. The drug industry is pretty disgusting.

But, that said, it would be easier to get hold of... then again, if it's there, is it that enchanting? No, but it's there. Although, if you could, say, buy heroin in a shop, it would be of a higher quality. People are educated enough not to take heroin, right? Eh...

I find this a really difficult matter. Legalising drugs has many pros, but there are also about a thousand cons. It could help a lot of the problems surrounding drugs, but it could also screw humans up further.

If heroin was legal and sold in shops at 'fit for human' consumption levels and a resonable strength, I'd probably try it.

I guess, for it to work, they'd have to fix dosages and stuff to such a fine extent, and that would never work.

Conclusion: whatever we do will be wrong

    Damn right.

But humans will always find one way or another to fuck them selves up.

It just sucks when they put the sniffers on you when your trying to get into a festival is all.

    Legalize pot , please?
Then i wont have to do it sneakily, pot itself isn't addictive, you would have to be smoking a lot of pot on a daily basis and mixing harder drugs with it to become ill/addicted.

Pot is used to help cancer patients , people with joint problems etc So why can't it be legalized. It grows in the ground for gods sake.

No offence but has half of the people commenting on this debate even had a spliff?
Im betting peoples opinion would change if they did..

Im not saying im a drug addict i dont smoke pot that often but it would be nice to have the odd J and not be on edge about the police finding you .

I havent tried it before but I honestly dont think marijuana should be illegal.

It is so much better in most cases than cigarettes. Marijuana is not addictive, the addiction is all in your head (Thats just my opinion).

Because alcohol is legal. So are cigarettes. So I don't see why marijuana is illegal.
