I will start almost all of my stories on paper and write at least half of it overall on paper. I think that ultimately stemmed from the fact that the first real story I ever wrote was started while I was at school (without access to a computer) and was only ever typed out three years after it was finished. My second full-story has actually never been typed out, come to think of it.
But I've recently started to do most of my writing on the computer, or at least make back-up, typed out copies of everything. That's because I almost lost all of my written work a year ago when my room flooded.
I still do a lot of writing on paper because I still write a lot at school and my computer is a pain in the butt to take anywhere. I also really love the act of writing on real paper. Although my thoughts flow better while I'm typing, I can't shake my love of actually writing things out.
I go in between. I usually have both my laptop and a notebook on me, so in class when I can't use my laptop or if it's not charged, I can use my notebook (:
It's nice writing on paper then in a document, because that way I can sort of have three different rough versions of something on a page and choose which one's best, or which parts of each one is best.
I like both for different things. If I'm writing, reflecting, brainstorming, and such I want paper. But if I'm in the zone, I'd rather have my computer because it's easier to keep up with my thoughts when I'm typing. Easier to keep up with and much more legible.
I like the privacy of typing on a computer, but it's easy for me to get distracted. If I don't type it out on my computer, I usually use my phone to type it out. But I do prefer writing by hand. That's how I originally started writing, on paper. I have notebooks upon notebooks and binders where I have my writing. There is just a sense of closeness when I write on paper. I use colored pens, or black (only if they write really smoothly) and I prefer college ruled papers. I like to type it out and change things and see how my writing progresses when I transfer it to the computer.
I almost always use a computer. I'm a fast typer and I like how I can format it in Word exactly to my liking. I do tend to do a lot of planning and outlining by hand with a notebook and pencil (although I usually transfer this over to my computer and I still do most of my planning/outlining in Word). If I don't have access to my laptop, I'll type it up as a text or memo in my cell phone. I also tend to use my phone for typing out random thoughts, phrases, or words I hear or see that inspire me or that I'd like to include in my story.
Also, if I'm somewhere without access to a computer or my phone, I'll use paper for my actual writing and type it up later. I'm not in school though, so this is pretty rare.
I tend to jump back and forth depending on the situation. For nano – or something similar to it – I find it kind of impractical to write by hand, especially considering that I need constant reassurance that I've made a dent in the word count.
Generally speaking, though, I have less motivation when using a computer. There's just something about a pen and paper for me that just makes me want to write. I simply have more motivation when writing by hand. And I like my printing and my cursive so I'm golden either way.
I feel my writing is substantially better when I write longhand and transfer it to the computer, because I make changes as I type, but I prefer just typing it. It's not as messy to go back and edit things and it doesn't smudge. (being left-handed has its cons :c)
We have two computers in the house, a mac and a pc. The pc is in my room and I have to say, opening Microsoft Word and just writing is far easier than using Pages on the mac or writing longhand. Saying that, I do have a book beside my bed which I often use for writing in, but it’s just for fantasies and weird stories that I would never dare to publish.
@ you look well on me. What utensil do you use to write? Smear-free pens should prevent smudging. (And if you use pencils, they now make smear-proof gel pencils.)
Me I prefer paper, I don't know why but staring at the computer screen doesn't get me anywhere. I have to sit somewhere it was usually in class when I was done my work and just had to do something and stay quiet. Sometimes I will start a chapter on paper but finish on the computer depending but love that I can take a empty notebook and pen to wherever I want and just go off in my own world.
Well I use my laptop almost 80% of the time because its a small notebook so whenever I have an idea I just flip it open and type to my heart and mind's content. the other 20% is when my brain overloads and I need new scenery...or I just forget my notebook. I hhave a writers journal sO I just write down anything that comes to mind. I guess I am more of a laptop person.
Personally I would love to be able to jump on my computer and write away, but for me that's hard with my busy life. Writing on paper is easier first then transferring it to the computer later. Also I write on paper first because I've had so many computer crashes and when I would get my computer fixed, all my writing would be lost. I find it a lot safer to write on paper. Yeah, it's annoying at times to have to redo everything and type it after you've already wrote it once, but it does help me at least to write on paper first.
