Book of the Week: What We Saw at Night

Allie Kim and her best friends (Rob and Juliet) suffer from a rare genetic disorder that forces them to hide from the daylight and live in the night. Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a fatal allergy to sunlight, not only keeps them away from the sun - and 'normal' society - it keeps them bound to their small town in Minnesota, where the country's most comprehensive XP treatment and research facility resides.

While the 'daytimers' are out and about living their normal lives, Allie sleeps in and studies privately. But when the sun goes down and the town sleeps, Allie, Rob, and Juliet are determined to own the night. When Juliet - former teen ski champion and thrill junkie - discovers Parkour, she quickly convinces Allie and Rob to train with her. Using the empty landscape of the town, the trio practice dangerous stunts like leaping between rooftops or 'bouldering' up and down the side of tall buildings.

It's during a Parkour stunt that Allie witnesses what she believes to be a murder. In the town's newest apartment complex, Tabor Oaks, an unknown man slaps around what appears to be a bruised corpse of a young woman. Terrified, Allie, Rob and Juliet quickly flee the complex, leaving an anonymous tip with local law enforcement and hoping for the best. This night changes everything.

In the weeks to come, Allie's world is turned upside down. It seems no one can be trusted - not even her best friends or the doctors she's known all her life. Her life is in danger and her friends are in trouble. What's worse? No one will believe her.

Jacquelyn Mitchard's What We Saw at Night is a thrilling novel that's sure to keep the interest of any reader who loves suspense and mystery. Riddled with secrets, betrayal and unbelievable injustices, this novel will leave any reader with a knot in their stomach and a thirst for more.
