There was a strange yet captivating depth to his eyes - it hypnotised her, led her to him like a lamb to the slaughter.

For some, medicine is more than a mix of chemicals thrown into a bottle. Medicine can be music, tailor-made to dull the senses, or perhaps it’s the solace found in absorbing yourself completely and utterly into the pages of a book. It can be as complex as hours and hours of expensive therapy, or as simple as a single conversation. For two people, it is this art of conversation that keeps them both calm and ready for whatever the world will face them with.

Medicine is a beautiful short story that deals with these two unnamed characters and their mindless conversations. For them, their release is talking about anything and everything, but never the problems they are facing. Each is the saviour of the other and through a series of meetings that would seem useless and mundane to the standard passer-by they find in each other someone who they can trust wholly.

Throughout this short piece, ruthann paints absolutely stunning pictures of the relationship between these two characters by making use of breathtakingly beautiful metaphor and simile, coupled with a wonderful simplicity that allows the reader to connect with the characters. Totalling in at just over 560 words this piece is one that, although over in minutes, is one that allows the reader to go on a journey through the sweet story of two people who are to each other just as the title suggests: medicine.
