"He slipped away, the shadows surrounding him, leaving her alone.

Just as she always had been."

The battle between heart and head can be a difficult one, and battles that wage between logic and blind love are often the ones that we struggle to win without losing a part of ourselves. This battle of common sense and feelings can be portrayed in any way — it can be being friends with somebody that we know is poisonous but can’t seem to let go of, or it can be in the guise of a relationship where one partner is abusive, but the victim just can’t seem to see past the rose-tinted glasses of love and break away.

The latter is explored in heartbreaking detail throughout Fingertips. The nameless couple are in trouble — this much is evident through the interactions we see. A slap on the jaw, a harsh word here and there; all actions that build up in the reader’s mind and cause the relationship to seem all-too-very one-sided. The snapshots of the relationship are a rollercoaster of emotion and sadness, as we watch the main character sink further and further into the depths of an abusive relationship.

With chapters that exude a drabble-like quality, losing control. creates almost breathtaking scenes where we see the nature of the relationship change. Each chapter exudes a different moment in the relationship, from the darkest depths of abuse to the elation of true love. Emotional and raw, Fingertips is a story that will leave the reader both heartbroken and hopeful that the main character will find something more than the dark hole that they seem to be receding into. The sheer amount of implicit emotions exuded throughout the piece and the difficult topic make this piece one that is tiring on the soul, but the way that losing control. spells out the mechanics of the relationship make for an interesting look into an entirely different world. The descriptive nature of the chapters give it a wonderfully poetic nature, making it extremely easy to read.

If you’re looking for a story that’s short, but packs a lot of punch, then look no further than Fingertips.
