and yeah, that could be it. whenever i hit him he goes "ungh" but he does the animation like he's talking to someone. then when i point my gun at him he doesn't say "how would you like it if i pointed my gun at you for a while" and i'm like boone no

I have Rex as a companion, and I had Boone, too, but the AI is all wonky with them. I know the game is super glitched, so I only use them when I have to now. Which means I won't get Boone's backstory or the special quest he has. I mean, I know his backstory, but I want him to trust me. ;_;
