Thanks for your comment! I really appreciate it. I wrote that first chapter a long time ago, and I guess while reading through I didn't notice the choppy sentences but there was always something about it that unsettled me. I revised it and switched up sentence structures, and I think it's a lot better now, so thanks so much for your help!

I just wanted to respond to your idea of making the first description of the house as he saw it.
That is actually what I had intended to get across. Both parts are from around the same time, give or take a day or so. The man in the story is old, but he still sees himself as a young boy with a beautiful house and living family. In the second part where it describes the house as run down, this in fact what it really looks like, whereas in the first part, where it is sunny and picturesque, it is how he percieves what is around him.
I'm sorry if I didn't exactly write it well enough for that to come across that way, but I just wanted to let you know that that was was I had in mind and had intended to come across in my writing (:
