Oh thank goodness! I am so relieved to hear that you and your loved ones are safe. I can’t even imagine what you must be feeling right now. A half hour is such a short drive and to have had your brother and mom there, it’s hard to think about. I feel so bad for your brother having had to witness that carnage, and to have to keep it together for the kids must have been emotionally exhausting. It’s a good thing your mom answered her phone when she did. Otherwise you and your family would’ve been stressed out and worried about her. At least that way you knew that she was safe.
There is nothing wrong with crying. You cry as much as you need to. Eventually, you’ll feel better and be able to cope with it. That just takes time, especially after such a horrific act of terrorism. I only hope that the international community can come together to finally put an end to Jihadist extremism, because they have taken enough innocent lives. They’re murdering people in Syria and the Middle East and now it’s Brussels and Paris, and it’s just . . . it has to be dealt with, because enough is enough. I only hope that the international community doesn’t give into Islamophobia when it goes on the offensive.
Believe me, I completely understand that you had other things you needed to do. I’m just grateful that you got back to me, and now (and I know this sounds ridiculous because we’ve never met or anything), but I just feel better knowing that you’re okay :)

    Hello my dear friend,

I know I'm ignoring the last comment you had sent me but I just wanted to make sure that you and all your loved ones are safe. I'm not sure where it is exactly that you live in Belgium, you might even be really far from Brussels, but I just wanted to ask if you were okay. I really really hope you and all your loves ones, are.

Haha well at least with those bright yellow trainers, you know that if you ever go out walking or jogging, everyone will be able to see you. Hey that’s okay! Where are you seeing Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at? I bet they’re fantastic live. Macklemore just have this really great energy to him.
You really should! Tell him I’ll drive all the way out to Beverly Hills if he just collaborates with the fanciest of chocolatiers.
See now I know the most important words. Chocolade and Bier – I feel like I can travel to Belgium now and get exactly what I want. Although to be honest, I don’t think I could survive a trip to Belgium. All that delicious chocolade and bier! Either my liver would fail or I would go into a sugar coma lol
I am so beyond excited for it! I kept saying that I would go for years but finally my sister was like let’s make it happen. So we’re going to Dublin and the ring of Kerry, and we’re going to be visiting my grandparents for a day and meeting relatives, but as horrible as this sounds, all they’re getting is a day because this lady needs to immerse herself in the Emerald Isle.
    Berlin?!
That’s going to be fucking rad! There’ll definitely be lots of sight to see. And as a fellow history geek, it’ll be fascinating to be able to explore it and visit memorials and while I imagine it’ll be emotionally draining sometimes, it’ll be awesome :)

I don’t view that as toxic, because those people will literally just be getting what they deserve and what they’ve put out into the world.
Seriously! Exactly! That’s why I have such a hard time letting go of shoes. When I was in high school, I had a pair of converse that I absolutely LOVED and they were old but they were perfect because they just had the right fit because I’d had them forever and my mom bought me new ones but I refused to wear them, until finally one day while I was at a tournament she threw them out. It was sneaky, but she had to use those tactics with me.
Oooo you have to try it and let me know! Haha it is my first and I agree, it is the best word to know! And yes! We must make that happen. Who knows maybe he’ll sell them online or a high end chocolatier will have them.
Awe :) That made me feel special! I’m also about to head off to bed although it’s not quite midnight. It’s 9:52.
I’ve been good! Working and going to school, and waiting impatiently for May 29th to come around because I’m going to go on holiday to Ireland for a week. I am so fucking stoked for it. I’m going to pound the pints and whiskey, and stuff my face with potatoes. Because in my heart, I know I’m a hobbit. I’m chubby, jolly, love to garden and a good drink lol

I completely agree! Being nice to new people just makes you a decent human being, but there are so many people out there who seem to go out of their way to be negative and cruel, and I just don’t understand why some people are so toxic, because that’s the only way I can think to describe them. Because I mean, how can anyone be so mean on a regular basis and be happy in their lives? Like I don’t think that’s possible, so I think those people must be pretty miserable.
Same here! If adults could only just be tolerant that would be a huge step! To have them be accepting would be an added bonus!
Haha I feel better now, because I genuinely don’t think a dozen boots are that much. I mean, I feel like I have more flats than boots but nothing ever gets said about the flats. I do that to. I go through a phase where I’ll exclusively wear my new shoes, but I think where I mess up is that I tend to forget about them for a long time and get new ones to wear. That’s why I hated moving, because all of a sudden when I was packing things up, I found boots that I hadn’t seen in years and I wanted to keep them but I had to donate them because I can be a bit of a hoarder when it comes to shoes.
Oooo I need to try Delvora chocolates. I googled it and went to their site, the only thing I understood was chocolade, but my goodness does it look delicious! Here’s hoping I can try them one day!
    Also, how are you?

Thank you! And Happy New Year to you!
I hope you had a great night celebrating and that the New Year brings you all good things :)
That’s just because some people are so close minded that they think that just because you have differing views with someone that automatically means you can’t get along. It’s like you said, it’s common sense for people to get along. If a person treats you well and is kind/friendly then there’s absolutely no reason to hate them.
I definitely think that more than one kid will remember, and God willing that shock will help them in becoming tolerant and accepting adults, because those are the kind of people that this world so desperately needs.
Oh my goodness, shoes are my weakness! Well boots to be more precise. Hector says it’s excessive and always has to remind me that I have enough, but I only have like a dozen and sometimes when I see them at the store I’m just like drooling over them, because I love a good pair of ankle boots. They go with jeans and dresses, and you can dress them up or dress them down, and they are so fucking comfortable. I got a pair of Coach ones for Christmas, and it is like walking on a cloud – I’m obsessed. I love online shopping though. I do a lot on Amazon, but I like to shop on websites for stores that I already go to, that way if there’s any issue I can always return it to the store, but I usually have good luck about picking the right sizes.
That’s right! I’d forgotten about that. I remember we talked about this when the World Cup was going on.
Oooooo now I’m intrigued. What’s the name of the chocolatier? Because I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of Belgian chocolates, and if you are saying those are the best, I want to try them.

Haha that’s quite alright! That happens to me with text messages. I read the message, mentally think of a reply and I get distracted so I end up thinking that I send it, but more often than I care to admit, I haven’t replied.
    Also, MERRY belated CHRISTMAS!
I hope you had a fantastic time with your family, and that there was lots of delicious food and laughter!
Exactly! That’s how I feel about Christian terrorists and extremists, but for some reason their brand of terror is excused as mental illness and as unfortunate instances. It’s infuriating that those acts aren’t treated in the manner that they ought to be.
Before we moved I lived about an hour and a half away, but houses are reasonably priced in the Inland Empire so we came out here. It’s a bit surreal, and you can still feel the tension in the area. This is a predominantly Republican area, so I think that speaks for itself on the quality of ideas and beliefs. It’s changing though which is great. There are a lot more Latinos and African Americans moving in, which I like, because I can't live surrounded by people who genuinely like Trump and those other fools.
Are you serious? That’s ridiculous. It’s like how can that possibly be a bad thing? It’s demonstrating that people can coexist and work and live together in peace, and that they can get along. I’m glad that that’s the reactions the kids had to apartheid. Their generation is growing up in a different world and hopefully they won’t be tainted by the ignorance and bigotry of some hateful adults. And honestly, I do genuinely believe that some people would prefer to go back to the days of Apartheid. I don’t understand their mentality, I don’t get how they can possibly be so offended by the existence of people who don’t look like them, but those people exists.
    AHHHH!
To stay in the spirit of the season, the wrapping might be a little different, but the package is quite similar.
I LITERALLY screamed when I read that. I even scared my puppies a little. I shit you not, I’ve said that same thing about religion. This is why we are both such rad human beings.
Haha the Toyotas also contribute to our exceptionalness :) And agreed! I am the same way. I will from time to time complain about my Fitzwilliam, but if someone else does it they will be glared at.
And I’m sure you’ve found some great deals while you’re out shopping. Personally speaking, I love online shopping. There are always deals to be had that can’t be found in store. I say this because I just splurged on some winter coats and pants, because I figured that since we’re actually going to have a real winter in California that I should be ready for it. And there were also some boots . . . but I couldn’t pass up on a boot sale. When something used to be a hundred and got marked down to $30 and they’re cute, I can’t pass it up!
I had never heard about this tradition. I like it!
That’s one of the things that trips me out about Europe. A person can drive an hour or two and be in an entirely different country. By the Netherlands? That’ll be fun for him and for you. I don’t know how you feel about the Netherlands, but a visit to your brother’s place could easily turn into a stop into the neighboring country!
This is a random thought, but I thought about you the other day. I went to the mall last week to grab a few last minute gifts and in this specialty chocolate store they had these really delicious Belgian chocolates. I can’t recall the name, but I thought of you :)

Exactly! Less than a week ago there was a white Christian terrorist kill 3 people at a Planned Parenthood because he didn’t believe in abortion. See it’s things like that that piss me off! An entire community can’t be held accountable for the action of a few fanatics. I’m glad that there were people that stood up for that woman. It’s getting that bad here where I live. There was a massacre in San Bernardino, which is two cities over from where I live and it was a Muslim man and his wife that killed 14 people and injured 17 others. I remember when I heard about it all I could do was hope that it hadn’t been Muslims, because people are on edge over ISIS and the moment they said it was, the hatred began being spewed. And the level of ignorance is astounding! I take daily walks with my dogs and in the past I’ve had to defend a Sikh against an Islamophobe, but ever since that shooting on Wednesday it’s gotten worse. It hasn’t just been while I’m out on walks, it’s happening inside stores and restaurants, and I just don’t understand how people can be so nasty. In the United States, Muslims haven’t perpetrated the most homicide, it’s older white Christian men but people are just so racists and are so quick to hate anyone who doesn’t look like what an American is “supposed” to look like.
I feel the exact same way whenever I see him! He is a hateful man that spews nothing but nonsense and it terrifies me that so many people agree with him. The thing about teachers having gun is a common thing here in the States. The Republicans are always arguing that schools would be so much safer if that were the case, but like you said, students wouldn’t feel comfortable going to school if their teacher’s have guns. Hah! That’s true. That’s probably why they don’t want to do background checks because they know they won’t be allowed to have guns if that were the case. I just hope they do something soon. I’ve been writing letters and calling my representatives but its frustrating. Just last night, Congress voted down a bill that would’ve banned people that are on the no fly list from being able to get a gun. I don’t understand why they would do that. If people can’t be trusted on a plane, why should they be trusted with guns?
I can’t judge you on that, I got my car from my parents to, but there’s a difference between giving your child a reliable car and getting them something that costs seventy thousand dollars. Wow you’ve had that car for a long time. I can’t help but ask if you’ve named it. I gave mine a name, my little Yaris is my English love. He’s my Fitzwilliam Rochester. And amen to that! There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with earning the things you have and being able to buy them on your own. I know I don’t have fancy clothes or the latest electronics, but what I do have, I’ve worked hard for.
Ah! That sounds wonderful! I like the way the cold feels when it nips at your cheeks a little, but you’re bundled up. Haha! I feel the same. It’s amazing to curl up with a blanket on the couch and watch the teli. It’s one of the reasons why I love winter so much more than summer.
I did enjoy the ham and tamales. I ate a few to many tamales, but I don’t regret it haha. Now I’m looking forward to Christmas for all the yummy food. I’ve already put up my lights and next week I get my tree!
Side note, does your brother live far from you? I remember you mentioned that you were helping him paint his condo.

It really is. There is much Islamophobia in the media and it reaches people so easily that they begin to believe that that’s the truth, when it’s nothing more than slander, because the attackers don’t represent the religion. Oh my god, that kid that said his dad also had a beard. I can almost picture the innocence with which it was said. It was probably one of those moments where he felt it couldn’t possibly be true because his dad definitely isn’t like that. And you’re right. In all his pictures, he’s clean shaven.
And your opinion is one that I strongly share. The Republicans are disgusting because they seem to genuinely believe that more guns are the answer to the problems. It’s like how can you expect people who are going out to have a good time, to see a rock show to have a gun on them. They wanted to enjoy themselves and disconnect from the world while they heard the music that they loved, and to make it seem like they deserved to die because they weren’t armed . . . it fucking pissed me off. Trump and the other Republicans disgust me. These are the same people that believe that teachers should have guns in classes to prevent mass school shootings. How is that the answer? How could that possibly be the answer? I’m terrified of them and people that agree with them. I want comprehensive gun legislation, I want high capacity rifles and assault weapons off the streets and I want rigorous background checks and mental health screenings and a database to be held on who has what guns, but people would rather risk their safety than their right to bear arms, and it’s infuriating.
Haha I love that you referred to him as the awful one. That guy was such a pain, and he genuinely didn’t care or make an effort. His dad spoils him way too much. He drives a BMW and he’s only a personal assistant. It’s like at some point his dad needs to cut the cord and have his son learn how to be a self sufficient adult, because he’s not going to live forever. I don’t know. I kind of feel bad for the guy, but I also have a feeling he’s going to receive a large inheritance when the time comes, so as long as he doesn’t mismanage it, he’ll be good.
The cold sounds wonderful, but I agree with you on the rain. I can handle the cold. Bundling up and drinking hot chocolate are great, but having to drive in the rain or walk in it is miserable. And thank you! I know you’re not celebrating Thanksgiving, but I still want to wish you a happy one :) Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to put on my tights and my dress and go feast on some ham and tamales!

Hearing that honestly warms my heart, and honestly, props to you and your colleagues for putting that together! It’s great that you were able to have that conversation with the children, and that they were able to see for themselves how unfair it would be to lump all the Muslims together. I feel like the US needs to fly you three out here to give a talk on the subject, because despite the fact that the attack happened in Paris, there are millions of fools over here that are acting like major assholes.
Haha yes! The other one was awful, but thankfully since his dad retired from the firm, my boss was able to hand him off to one of the lower ranking lawyers, It all worked out, that lawyer gets a little bonus every year and I finally have someone that helps get things done.
Exactly! Light jackets are meant for sixty degree weather, but in Southern California its treated like freezing, and later this week we are going to have two days in the fifties which has a lot of people freaking out. I’m sure I’ll be one of them when the time comes, but as long as I’m not as bad as that guy with the blanket, I’ll be good :)

Believe me, I don’t understand it either. Those bastards aren’t Muslims, they’re extremists that have twisted and manipulated their religion to suit their barbaric purpose. I can’t even view them as people. They’re savages. And I hate that because of their vileness, all the other Muslims in the world are once again experiencing a fresh wave of Islamophobia.
I pray they find him quickly and everyone else that conspired to bring about the attacks. I’m relieved/glad that you and all the people you know weren’t affected by the attacks. I was genuinely worried, because I feel like everything is just a train ride away in Europe, and I was just like I need to check in see how things are going. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being paranoid right now. There’s a manhunt underway and with things the way they are its better to err on the side of caution. And hey, you’re not stupid. If having the doors locked and drapes drawn makes you feel more secure, then so be it. After 9/11, I was scared for awhile. Especially when we had threats made against Los Angeles, but in time, the fear passes and you can go about the day like you used to. I know that sounds crazy right now, what with how everything’s been, but things always get better. And I feel so bad that that child hid under their table. They shouldn’t grow up in a world where that happens. They should be worried about finishing their homework and whether or not their parents will let them go over to their friends houses.
There is no need to apologize. If you need to vent about this, I am here for you. My comment section or private messages are fully at your disposal :)
Yes! The other assistant and I went into overdrive. I genuinely like that guy, he pulls his weight and if I can’t finish something, he actually finishes it up for me. It’s wonderful! Believe me, I fully intend to. We’re celebrating Thanksgiving next Thursday, and while we usually have the standard Mexican beers, I’m feeling like the selection has to be diversified. Haha. You should see how ridiculous myself and my fellow Southern Californians get. These last couple weeks have been in the low to mid sixties, and everyone has been wearing thick jackets and full on winter gear. The other day I saw a guy walk to his mailbox with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders and I could not stop laughing. The ridiculousness is just off the charts on this side.

Hmm, next time I go to my craft beer store I’m going to have to look out for Desperados and Cubanisto.
I’m glad you enjoyed the last few hours of your fall break, and I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been watching the news and they were talking about how they were looking for terrorists in Belgium, and I was like I need to check up on my friend and see how she’s doing. I know you said you lived in a smaller area, but still. I hope you and your family and all your loved ones are good over there.
As for me, I’ve been fine. I’ve been putting in a little more hours at work because my boss was dealing with a big case but that’s been settled. He wanted to have it done before Thanksgiving, and so we had to get our butts into gear, but I’m good. We’ve been having cold weather so I’ve been enjoying that.
Again, I hope you and all your loved ones are okay!

Wait. Wait. Wait! There’s a beer that has tequila in it?! That is fucking awesome! What’s its name? I have to have it! My brother’s going to get a kick out of this when I tell him. I seriously need to try that. I bet its delicious. And believe me, the tequila in it would’ve thrown me off as well. That definitely sounds like something a Mexican would’ve invented.
Haha yes! Now we just need to put that plan into motion! We’ve moved onto winter weather over here. Now we’re in the low seventies, and in true Southern California fashion, there are already people roaming the streets in thick jackets and scarves haha. Oh my goodness 55° and 65° sound amazing! I’ll definitely take that! I just love being cold, because you can put on long sleeve shirts and bundle up and cuddle up on the couch with a blanket. It’s perfect! It’s not like the heat where you can literally get naked but still be super hot because its in the hundreds. I love cold weather. It’s one of the things I miss about Berkeley, even though it never got below fifty, it was still grand. How’ve you been?

That’s insane! I always figured that since Belgium is so lush and green that the people would know how to drive in the rain, but I guess not. That makes me feel a lot better about my fellow Californians.
Alas, I didn’t get to have the Belgian beery goodness. We ended up being lazy and not wanting to change out of pajamas so we drank the Mexican beers that we had in the fridge. They were good, but still, I felt like experimenting. Next time though I will, and I’ll let you know how it goes :)
It’s in the forties? That’s crazy. That’s full on winter weather. You know what, since you don’t like colder weather and since I am desperate for it, I think I have an offer to make. We can swap! You can have this eighty degree Southern Californian fall weather and I’ll go have that forty degree Belgian fall. We can switch back before Christmas lol.

Okay. Now I understand why the Safari wasn’t as epic an experience as it should’ve been. I mean when you go on one, you don’t want it to be crowded with other jeeps and to have music blaring. It’s supposed to be quiet so as to not disturb the animals. That is beyond stupid. How can they advertise a guide as speaking Dutch when they only speak German? That is false advertising. Did you complain?
I’ll definitely let you know! I’m going to be visiting my favorite craft beer store this Saturday to stock up for a drunk night in, so I’ll definitely be on the look out for that.
And not at all! I’m just clueless on most things, but rest assured had I known from some other source that is what International Teachers Day, I would’ve definitely wished you a happy one!
Completely understood. That’s how I feel about the rain. I absolutely love it when I’m at home, but when I have to go out in it I hate it because Californians don’t know how to drive in rain. You’d think they’d just slow down a few miles, but no, they want to keep driving like maniacs. And thank you! The weather cooled down! We’re not in the mid eighties! I think in another two weeks we’ll finally be in the seventies!

Exactly! There’s a difference between guns for hunting and personal protection, and weapons that in my opinion are designed to expedite murders because they can kill so many people at once, but the Southern States and Republicans just don’t seem to grasp that concept. I’m hoping that at least in my home state of California, we’ll be able to implement strict gun control laws.
I just googled Alanya, and oh my goodness it is beautiful! Lounging by the pool and beach must have been perfection. How was the safari? Was there a lot of wild life to be seen? Oh okay. That does sound really greasy, although I’m hoping there was plenty of fruit and refreshing drinks to indulge in. That Kriek Belle Vue beer sounds delicious. I’m going to have to visit my specialty beer store to see if they carry that. I’ve been on a Belgian beer kick lately. Mostly it’s been Chimay and Duvel that I’ve been having, but I need to try that cherry one.
Happy Belated International Teachers Day! Good on that principal for taking Belgian chocolates. Lol I don’t blame you and your colleagues! Belgian chocolates are sooo good. During Christmastime they sell them at Costco as well as French truffles, and needless to say, I go to town on them. 55° sounds perfect! We were at 68° on Sunday and it was wonderful!

And also, I'm jealous of the nice weather you had. We were int he hundreds most of the summer, and today and tomorrow we're finally in the 60s/70s, but by the end of the week it'll be in the hundreds again. Enjoy your cool weather! I'm looking forward to being able to wear a jacket again.

I agree with you entirely. In the US, we have mass shootings every two weeks and I just don’t understand how nothing’s being done about it. The Republicans keep saying that it’s such a pity but that gun control isn’t the answer, and it’s just infuriating.

And as for the Lyndon B. Johnson and Bobby Kennedy fusion, it’s definitely a good thing! Johnson became president after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and he was kind of a dick. He would bully people into passing legislation, that’s actually one of the reasons that Civil Rights legislation was implemented during the 1960’s, and I just have a soft spot for Bobby. He was a dreamer. He had these wonderful ideas and reached out to minority communities and really wanted to make a difference, and he wasn’t just talk, he was hardworking and ruthless, but they killed him like they did JFK. It’s sad really. And I can’t help but wonder from time to time what course the United States would have taken had he lived and been elected to the presidency, but my energy is best spent campaigning for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. I’m not entirely sure who I’ll vote for in the primaries. My heart is Bernie’s, but when I was seventeen/eighteen, I full on devoted myself to the Clinton campaign, and I can’t help but feel that I owe that eighteen year old the chance to vote Hillary into office.

That is fucking awesome! Where did you go in Turkey? And most importantly – what did you do? How was the food? And did you take lots of pictures? That sounds like fun, and I bet the kids are going to appreciate having a well decorated space to play in.

As for myself, I’ve been good. I recently moved from my hometown so I’m adjusting to a new area, which is a lot hotter than I’m used to. I keep having to smother myself with sunscreen when I go out into the yard, but I like the house and it’s exciting. And I thought of you the other day. I went out drinking with my brother at a pub in South Pasadena. They had over sixty beers on tap, and I don’t remember the names of all the ones we had, but there was a Belgian one named Duvel that I just loved. So since I was pretty gone by then, I told him, “I wonder if Ine drinks this.” To which he responded by saying that he didn’t know who the hell that was, and to which I said that that’s my Belgian friend. The conversation then drifted to how he would probably die in Belgium because he would drink too much beer and eat too much chocolate, but according to him, he’d go a happy man haha.

No need to apologize for the multiple comments! Mibba was just eager to share it :)
And you’re completely right about her. I like to think about Paulina as a Lyndon B. Johnson and Bobby Kennedy fusion, she has her ideals and principals, but she’s also willing to fight for them.
How have you been? Did you have a good summer?

I’m sorry to hear that. That fucking sucks. They went out of their way to accommodate the Foo Fighters and then that crap happened with Dave Grohl. Hopefully next year it’ll be in July again. That way you can enjoy it as an end of the year tret!
Daaaamn I did not know it could get so hot in Belgium! That is straight up Southern California weather. How long is that heat wave supposed to last? Hopefully not to long since you said you don’t have an air conditioner. That’s how I feel most days! I’m always blasting the air in my car. The best thing to do is to freeze yogurts and have them as a cold snack. That gets me through the heat!
Awe thank you so much! I’m working on another one right now. I wanted to have it up by today, but then fourth of July crept up on me and I had to drive around getting stuff for the BBQ tomorrow.
