The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady’s style is both poetic and intriguing. Some of the lyrics (as simple as they are) are able to touch on the most difficult events and hardships of being an adolescent in America. In fact, most of the lyrics are explicitly directed at the youth, which makes it a very changeable and colorful type of storytelling, since most kids have this incredible need for individuality and superiority amongst their friends and peers. It’s as if Craig Finn (lyricist, lead vocals) is able to understand this and make his lyrics hold true and, not to mention, steady for almost every teenager or immature adult out there.

I say immature adult because although the lyrics are sophisticated and intelligent, they are also very simple and directed (more-so in the album “Boys and Girls in America” than “Stay Positive”, in which the band takes a little more distant approach with their lyrics) toward adult listeners. They’re a high-end bar band, basically, but they’re the best bar band you’ve ever heard.

The Hold Steady's line up includes the following musicians:

  • Bobby Drake – drums (2005–present)
  • Craig Finn – guitar, vocals (2004–present)
  • Tad Kubler – lead guitar (2004–present)
  • Galen Polivka – bass guitar (2004–present)

I suggest you get their newest album, “Heaven is Whenever”, and have a listen. I can guarantee, with the utmost respect for those who love true rock and roll, that you will not regret it.

And if you don't do anything else, at least do this: stay positive.
