Enjoyed the article despite the title seeming to cause some controversy! Green Day will always be a big issue on me but I have to say I was a little disappointed with some of the songs on the new releases. Nevertheless they will always be one of my favourite bands:)

I'm sorry but Green Day does not deserve the title "God Fathers of Punk Rock". They didn't create the genre and they didn't perfect it either. Personally, I think they're too mainstream to be considered a punk rock band to begin with.

Green Day simply isn't punk. I suppose it doesn't matter what you call them, but it bothers me when musicians are put into musical categories that don't fit with the actual music they make.

@Billie Joe, why do you call my friend Bite Your Lips a derogatory name? She is not offensive in her comment at all. You want to report people for bashing you? You're a hypocrite and your immaturity to accept this situation is clear. It is not cute or pretty to talk like this, it's trashy. I suggest you apologize and edit your comment or I am going to report you.

Yeah, I'm aware of all this blah blah I listen to other punk bands as well. If I could change the name, I would, but as now it's impossible there's nothing I can do. Sorry.

I enjoy an article about Green Day. As you can see from my profile picture, I am quite a big Green Day fan. Being a Green Day fan, I hold a lot of respect for them as both artists and people. I know it's hard to take criticism about them, but it's better to just shrug it off and ignore it. They're just as entitled to have their own opinions about them, just as you and I do.

Concerning your article, I do think you could do more research. As many have stated before, they weren't really the "godfathers" of punk. Punk came into the scene into the early 60's with The Sex Pistols and The Clash in Britain and Iggy Pop and The Ramones in America. It was all about taking rock back to the nitty gritty, and strip it down to the essentials and kind of bashing the forms of rock that took themselves too seriously. I took a History of Rock class in college haha.

Green Day was part of the underground punk revival scene in the 90's, and were inspired by earlier punk artists.

I fully appreciate your effort and your interest in Green Day. I do believe they are a great band, despite what genre they now fall into.

Erm... I hate to disappoint you, but Green Day is commercial punk. I myself adore them, but the godfather of punk is Iggy Pop, and even David Bowie has some kind of history in punk, but definitely NOT Green Day. Especially their last albums.

My constructive criticism is to learn all you can about a topic---or at least a much as possible---if you're going to attempt to educate others on that very topic. But, teachers are still learners and all of that, I guess.

There is a polite way to disagree. That doesn't involve swearing at people. Constructive criticism is something anyone who posts online should expect, but we're not really being all that constructive anymore.

I was not offensive in my comment just directly pointing something out I did not curse like you are doing and I certainly did not call someone a c*** for having an opinion. Grow up little girl and get your panties out of a bunch.

I find that, given your age, this article is understandable. What I think most are trying to state in their own ways is that Punk was established long before Green Day and lives outside their conception of it. Punk was originally not a style but a life style and remains as such to many people to this day.

Punk is attributed to better artists before Green Days time and to give G.D a label that's unfitting of them does upset a lot of music lovers. Research would be best next time, as there is a lot that goes into "Punk" and how many perceive it.

You need to research before you make a post like this and not expect people lashing out at you. Some people take their music very seriously and furthermore calling Green Day the Godfathers of Punk Rock is a direct insult try POP PUNK. and then buy a vinyl by the Sex Pistols or I know youtube Operation Ivy or Oi Polloi that is REAL punk music.

It wont let me edit my comment, oops.

Punk Rock is The NY Dolls, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, The Ramones, Black Flag, Buzzcocks, Generation X, Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Television.

Green Day could maybe pass for the Godfathers of "Pop-Rock"...but...

I absolutely don't agree that they are the "Godfathers" of punk rock, lol...

Actually, I don't even classify them as "punk rock". They're very polished, I guess is a nice way to say it.

Seeing as punk really hit America in the '70s, I think Green Day missed the boat a little. I can see how you could make a case if you're talking about a more mainstream punk-pop thing though. They were crucial to bringing a punk-inspired sound more into the mainstream in the '90s and they were fairly successful at crossing over from a straightforward punk sound to a more polished and complex sound. They've done some impressive things in music, but I'm not sure you can call them the godfathers of punk. I do like Green Day quite a bit, but I think the title might be a bit misleading.
