The Great Twilight Debate
Time and time again we've watched Twilight Fans and Twilight Haters argue over the books and the influence they may or may not have on anyone.
Some people believe that Twilight is a huge negative influence, full of anti-feminism. It is argued that Bella's character is weak and dependent on Edward. She does seem to physically need him in her life, as we saw in New Moon. Bella practically had a psychological breakdown because he left.
Bella is willing to do almost anything to be with Edward. Even things Edward wishes she wouldn't do. Like her wish to become a vampire and live forever 19 with him. She's willing to risk her life being near him and so many other vampires who could easily kill her in seconds.
At first in the books Bella is not a strong character at all. She definitely has self-confidence issues. I think she doesn't really seem to know who she is or exactly what she wants out of life. She's ambiguous.
But there are arguments on the other side as well.
Those who have read all the books have watched Bella become the strongest player in the vampire game, finally being able to protect Edward for once, instead of being a damsel in distress. Bella gains so much self confidence upon becoming a vampire. She finally feels as is she belongs somewhere.
Though at what cost? Some will argue that Bella had to change herself just to be happy with the one she loved. The case being, Edward didn't want her to change. She made that decision herself, by herself only.
Some will argue that Bella tried to change Edward, believing he could become something good. In my opinion, she never tried to change him. She knew what he was. She accepted it about him. She knew it was what he would always be. She just didn't fear it.
Bella was a bit dependant on Edward. Maybe to much at times. But if you read the whole series, you watch her blossom to be Edward's protector in the end, as well as see a huge leap in her confidence and self image. Maybe it took her becoming a vampire to feel like she belonged, but at least she seems happy.
I admit, being a fan of Twilight, I am a bit biased on the subject. But who that's arguing about it isn't? One thing I will say, no matter what side of the argument you sit on, I don't think anyone can judge the books if they haven't read all four. In any saga, not just Twilight, there is an ark to the development of plot and characters in all the books. To truly understand, I think you should read all the books.
What side of the debate do you stand on?
