I liked Avatar. Not one of my favorite movies, but it was enjoyable. When I first watched it though it was with a group of my friends at a party, and we just started listing off all the moments that were like parts of other movies or video games, which was entertaining in and of itself. I guess this movie really just cemented my theory that there no new ideas in Hollywood, just new takes on old ideas, and there's not really anything wrong with that. Sorry this is kind of rambling.

I watch this move in theaters, and during mid - movie I grew restless and was edging for the movie to come to an end and for me to leave. For me it streched out for way too long. Definetly not something that will be pleasant for me to rewatch but don't regret spending ten dollars to watch.

I didn't want to watch this movie at first, it looked like another sci-fi flick only my mom would like. But once I watched it, I love it. It's one of those movies I can watch over and over and over again. It's got every genre to make everyone happy!

Honestly, I loved Avatar. Yes at times it was predictable and the creatures and Na'vi were a little over-the-top but I still impressed. I'd much rather watch this than Pocahontas. I hated that film, the only reason it was made in the first place was because she fell in love with a white man. Plus her name wasn't even Pocahontas, that was the name of the Aboriginal tribe she was apart of. I'm not denying that fact that they are very similar, but Avatar I would say is the better film. Although it is a bit over-rated I am hoping that the sequel with diminish the stereotypical "good" versus "evil" that does play a major role.
Also as many mentioned it is very long but imagine how bad it would be if they made it only 2 hours. It already was fairly rushed so it would just be completely lacking if the time was crunched even further.

My friend said he thinks Avatar is a complete rip-off of Dances With Wolves.
He even made a huge lists of similarities.

Avatar is a B-Grade movie and basically stole the storyline from Disney's Ferngully and Pocahontas. Sure the graphics were cool, but graphics are nothing if the storyline was done already. Thank goodness this film didn't win best movie and instead the excellent Hurt Locker won. Why don't people watch that instead?

Although I do agree that the story is predictable at times, I felt like Avatar was a great movie because of how applicable it is to modern times.

First and foremost, the conflict on Pandora is very clearly an allusion to the war in Iraq. Cameron doesn't try to hide this at all. I think his comparison to this imaginative, otherworldly setting in the future still strikes home as he discusses the concepts of understanding a culture and greed over resources. For example, the argument "there's plenty of other trees, can't they just find another one?" seems pretty valid until the viewer comes to understand why that specific tree is significant.

Secondly, it debated the importance of the environment vs. the importance of profit. This is a very relevant topic to the modern world, for obvious reasons.

Plus, it's not fair to say that it "ripped off Pocahantas" considering the whole script was written before Pocahantas'. Cameron was just waiting until he had the technology available to do it justice. Although I get that it might feel old because we've already seen Pocahantas, it's not really fair for some people to say it's a copy of that movie.

But nice review :)

The only thing that I saw in 3D was the ashes from the tree in like the end. The movie was good because I'm a fan of SyFy movies. I always have been. I mean, I've never really had a thing for Avatar. It was OK, but then again, I didn't like watching Titanic either. I'm just not a fan.

Like several people have pointed out, this movie is a sci-fi, overpriced version of two classic cartoon movies. Fern Gully and Pocahontas.

However, I have a new complaint. The background CGI effects were really the only good CGI bits of the film. I'll probably get a lot of disagreements with that but to me the natives and the animals just looked corny and that was really bizarre on the super lush and realistic backdrop.

So my overall opinion on the movie is to see it once, draw your own opinion on it but I don't think it deserved any of the awards it got and I don't think it's worth more than a rent...from redbox.

I saw this movie in 3D. Maybe it was the small town theater, but there were no 3D affects. It was, as you said, far too long. By the time I stood up my legs felt like jello and I thought I was going to fall over. Not to mention there were several points that made me want to fall asleep. The romance seemed to be the center of attention for quite some time. The movie didn't get really good until closer towards the end during the battle scene. However, I'm one of those people that has a short attention span and I find it hard to really get into movies like that. What I mean by 'movies like that' is that movies that don't get interesting to the very end bore me to no end. On the other end of the spectrum, movies that are only good in the beginning bore me as well. This was one of those movies I first mentioned. I, personally, need consisten action to keep my mind interested if a movie is going to be 3 hours long. Even then Avatar specifcially had several long drawn out scenes that were just highly unnecessary. I'm no film student and I don't plan on becoming one any time soon, but I can tell well enough when a scene should have been cut short.

As an after thought, I'd hate to see those deleted scenes.

Okay so! This movie was cool in my opinion...But the story was way to long. I feel as if it was left of on a slight cliff-hanger. :/ And yes, it was wayyy to long. I feel as if the beginning and the end were rushed a bit. True, the movie was very pretty and meaningful. :]

The movie was good, but I wouldn't watch it again. As ChrissieMarie said, the movie was pretty. I think that it was a little too long for my taste; three hours is a bit too much for me. I would give it a 5 or 6.

Avatar was "pretty". It was appealing to the eye, but that was about it. The storyline was majorly lacking. It was essentially watching Pocahontas tinted blue. I can easily point out examples of plotline similarities between the two and will, to simply illustrate my point. For one, there was the 'Jake Sully' 'John Smith' connection where both male protagonists have the same initials and number of letters in their names. Secondly, the theme of the "white men" invading the "New World" in search for a valuable substance (gold in Pocahontas, a specific element in Avatar). Both the Indian tribes in Pocahontas and the alien tribes in Avatar had very strong connections with nature that were significant to the plot of each movie. Also, the love story between the white, male protagonist and the tribal Princess was the central part of both films. In both films the male protagonist works to understand the tribes, while his "men" work to destroy the tribal culture merely for their own personal gain. Finally, both stories end with the successful but wounded hero returning home. The similarities are IMPOSSIBLE to ignore.
There was also just so much hype that the movie couldn't possibly live up to it, and I am shocked that my opinion seems to be that of the minority. The graphics crew for Avatar did a magnificent job, but I couldn't bear to watch the movie again due to the pathetic plot.
I'd hardly even give the film a 6 and feel that your rating was extraordinarily generous.

I thought it was wholly overrated, and if not in 3D it wouldn't have been as successful. Which is why DVD/Blu Ray sales aren't as high as they thought they would be - it's not in 3D.

I'm glad I saw it, but I wouldn't want to see it again.

Agreeable. The storline of the movie I had seen before more than twice. Nothing was really new to me save the technology and art of it. Like Kallisto said it was very much like Fern Gully and I'd even add Pocahontas to the list, the basic story plot was pretty much the same and I just really dun get the hype. And it doesn't help either that I have a friend who has made it her life's mission to learn Na'vi and even speaks it to me on msn.
As for the Halo comment delaware I think you've misinterpretated a little. The point was that the machinary seemed a little too much like the Halo machinary not 'what the humans of that age used.' part of creativity is being original and the machinary in the movie was not exactly original.
