Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters brings to the table a new twist to a classic tale. This movie, recently released this 2013, stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as our Hansel and Gretel along with Famke Janssen as the dark witch Muriel. With its runtime of 98 minutes and an estimated budget of 50,000,000 dollars, this movie does not fall short on action and brings to the viewers a realistic setting in medieval times.

If you recall the original tale from the Grimm Brother’s, Hansel and Gretel stars as young children in the story but this new remake stars both antagonists as they are older and more mature. The remake of Hansel and Gretel begins with a short scene when they were children and suddenly fast-forwards to when they are older. The film’s succeeding scenes are when they are older and become witch-hunters, sworn to kill all witches that practice dark magic. Basically, this movie is a continuation to the Grimm Brothers’ story.

Each actor surprisingly delved into their character but only Arterton had stood out for me. Surely, Renner and Janssen had done an extraordinary job portraying their characters but they fell short. I had personally chosen Arterton as my favorite because of her enthusiasm on playing the butt-kicking female heroine. Other characters such as Peter Stormare (Sheriff Berringer), Pihla Viitala (Mina) and Rainer Bock (Mayor) were generally supporting characters who did quite a good job themselves.

Although the plot was original and the film entertaining, I would like to suggest you reconsidering bringing children to watch this film. The movie contains adult humour and small gore that I, myself enjoyed and hopefully you will too.
