Mariya is a nineteen-year-old Russian woman who has been teaching herself magic from the age of seven. After being declared insane, she used her powers to escape from the mental asylum and now wanders around wooded areas in the countryside, practising her powers and enjoying being a general source of terror and urban legend. She is easy to anger and her wrath is something that people would like to avoid. She is strange and thoughtful and introvert, but also has a charm that she uses to get herself out of a lot of trouble. She is highly intelligent but has to force herself to see the bigger picture and take it into account before she acts.

Aleksandr is half-Russian, half-American. After his parents divorced when he was a pre-teen, he has unfortunately found himself not really wanted by either mother or father. Therefore, in the school semesters, he finds himself living with his reluctant father, who quickly ships him off to Russia to stay with his mother in the holidays. His mother has remarried to a cruel man who had no time for Aleksandr, and Aleksandr's situation becomes incresingly depressing. He meets Mariya during a chance meeting, and begins to take some of her teachings on board.
