He is also Eragon's half brother. Because of his infamous father he is shunned by others. They assume he must be just like Morzan and so consider him untrustworthy and dangerous. He is an outcast everywhere and is a stranger to much kindness. To survive he looses his ability to really trust people and prefers solitude rather than human company. His hard life begins when he was taken away from his mother right after birth and was raised by a wet nurse. His father granted her visits with him every few months. The boy lived in Morzan's castle for a time until Brom killed him. It was in this time that Murtagh got his scar at the age of three. After Morzan is sent to retrieve Saphira's egg Selena disappears to Carvahall to have Eragon Bromsson. She died soon after returning. Galbatorix then brought Murtagh to his castle in Uru’baen. The king arranged for his up bringing but other than that left him alone. On Murtagh’s 18th birthday Galbatorix invited him to a dinner where he hoped to use his enticing lies and convincing fantasy of a prosperous empire at peace, as Murtagh puts it in Eragon by Christopher Paolini, to win him over. Soon he saw the king’s madness was determined to escape. That’s where he meets Icenia and Aquasari. They escape and journey to Du Weldenvarden. Along the way he surprises himself by trusting the two and forming a strong friendship with the pair. His weapons are a yew bow, hand-and-a-half sword, and a dagger hidden in his boot.
