Brian Haner, Jr. is the author of a series of successful non-fiction paranormal books. He travels all over the country and investigates supernatural phenomena, though he is actually a skeptic. He has been invited to stay for two weeks in the Astor Hotel, located in Elmwood, Louisiana and owned by Robert Evans, the hotel's manager, who issued the invite to him. As strange things begin to occur immediately after he arrives, Brian becomes convinced in the existence of ghosts and discovers a much darker, more sinister presence that lurks at the heart of the hotel.

Victoria is a young English girl who lived in an orphanage in the mid-1800s. She died at the age of 13 in the fire that ravaged the building, which was then later rebuilt as the Astor Hotel. Her soul is one of many hundreds that has become trapped there. She appears to Brian numerous times throughout his stay at the hotel, to help him learn more about the history of the place. She believes he will be the one who can 'save them all'.

Beth is a young woman who lives in Elmwood. She meets Brian on his first day in town and befriends him instantly. She offers up information about the town itself and the Astor Hotel whenever she can to help Brian gain a better understanding so that he can further his research. Her real motives, and any background history on herself, currently remain a mystery.
