The main character of the story Shade has a problem with the community she lives in and how she fits in around it. She's known by her two colored eyes (one grey, one brown), and her strange ways. She's not a very talkative person because of her many personal problems that tend to become the focus in discussions. Throughout the story she learns to accept all of herself for who she is and rise above what people think of her.

Shade's mother has issues with men and money. Because of her first husband (Shade's father) being sent to prison for a crime he did not commit leaving the family in a financial hole, she has formed a problem with chasing men with money in their pockets in fear of becoming poor again. She doesn't form any emotional attachments to the men either, so it would be easier for her to move on to the next man.

Amara moved from Ethiopia to America living a dual life. She tries to keep some of her traditions and practice her culture, however it's hard when living in a society that does not accept it. However she soon becomes friends with Shade who is very accepting of her ways.

Sasha has a problem with putting her intelligence to use due to laziness and lack of concern. Her friends around her tell her about it however she never seems to listen. Regardless of her ignorance, she is an accepting and kind person, but sometimes her jealousy can get in the way.

Jada is Lorraine's close friend who is almost a follower. She does what Lorraine does and also has self confidence issues along with Lorraine. This causes her to partake in Lorraine's harsh jokes on others.

Wanya is Shade's boy toy and although he's slightly close to her, she would never consider him any more than that. Wanya listens to music with no means which influences his life. He lives with by no means and does nothing towards bettering his future of his way of living.

Lorraine is Jada's close friend. She is like the leader of their group of two (Lorraine and Jada). Lorraine has self esteem issues and because of that, she generally insults other people that have a trait that makes them socially unacceptable. She is also strongly influenced by her society and their acceptance of certain people.

Darnell is Sasha's best friend that has many problems of his own. However he works on overcoming those problems just like Shade does.

Mr. Daniels is Shade's neighbor. She's not too fond of him because he creeps her out, but he tends to keep much to himself.

Monroe shows obvious signs of racism towards African Americans because of his lack of knowledge of the race and it's history. However, other factors are to fault for his ignorance.
