Madeline is a D.C. ruins survivor born into the destroyed world several decades after the anti-matter war which annihilated modern civilization. Unlike her peers, Madeline is strong-headed and strong-willed with a personality that is perpetually unsatisfied with the routine life led in her place of origin. Eventually this leads her to journey past D.C. to search for a world that has been lost to her family and friends. She effectively becomes the first Moriston Explorer since her grandfather several decades ago.

Mimi is a D.C. ruins survivor born and raised in Moriston Station. She is extremely intelligent for her age, but due to the lack of advanced careers she has been relegated to cafeteria duty for most of her life. Despite wanting to join Madeline on her journey, Madeline manages to convince her to stay and keep a watchful eye on Moriston until her return.

Old Man Harris is a D.C. ruins survivor with a background he rarely ever talks about. He runs the scrap store in Moriston Station and is much more knowledgeable than he alludes to. Harris has served as Madeline's mentor for most of her life, telling her grand tales of her Explorer Grandfather's escapades outside of D.C.
