His background is kinda sad. His father, Zion is a master of MMA the top fighter, won thousands of fight. Unfortunately he had a bad fight against a cheater. Knockout is like an evil Captain America. He broke Zion's leg and left him for dead, never to fight again. His wife left him with 3 kids to raise. Zion raised Bernard and his brother as MMA fighters but Bernard's brother got into a dirty fight and received an electrical scar, ending his career. So Bernard was the generation's last hope. Bernard was prideful, well built and trying to be the best. He made a deal with a shadowy organization after losing a fight and got turned into a monster. A dragon/human hybrid.
