Well firstly, love the banner. Poptarts is fantastic with them.

I'm interested in what you have, but I don't like the tense it's written in. Present tense always sounds awkward to me especially when it's in first person. Plus, it makes action sequences just sound really stiff and they're difficult to transition. I like the mini history lesson you put in here, and while a bit slow and uninteresting--as all first chapters, I'm still uber intrigued. I'm excited for Tyler to make an appearance.
